Do they still have the original serial numbers? If so, that could eventually be like some cities in the U.S. becoming a "sister city" with one in a different country, only in this case between current and former camera ownes.

No, it's a new serial. The stamp on the bottom of the camera actually says "Battle Tested", so they must have replaced the entire bottom piece.
