Hello!
I've sifted through the threads pertaining to the forthcoming 1.8"–to–mini trade-in program, but couldn't find anything addressing the possibility of the traded-in mags being made available as a BT item. Sure, they would have to be rigorously tested etc; but if they've got life in them (as most of them should), they should be out in the world recording stuff!

Taking them off the market completely seems wasteful, at least for whatever % of them have relatively low cycles on them.
I get that RED sending used SSD's out into the world can be a risky move on their part, understandably it would be with an at-your-own-risk sort of contingency.

I've thought about this too. However, I think at the end of the day, if there's anything that makes RED think that there may be a hint of unreliability in one of their product offerings, they don't ever go that route.

Treating BT mags as consumable items that can't be refurb'd seems silly to the 99.99999% of us that have used REDMAGs day in and day out with zero issues. (I've been drinking the Koolaid since 2011, many people have had zero problems since '07)

I'm positive RED is thinking about the ONE person that's going to have ONE problem mounting ONE particular BT'd REDMAG and it's going to create a shitstorm of controversy. Because at the end of the day, it doesn't matter if you tried to save money, it doesn't matter if it didn't come with a warranty or you had to sign your life away to buy them----if it doesn't work, it doesn't work.

Look at the prosumer world. Remember when we had to buy MiniDV tape, and sometimes the head would get gunked up and fail? These days, half the off-the-shelf SSDs don't work in a BMD cam. But that's accepted in that world.

RED is a professional company. REDMAGS have to work.

Does it suck that good mags are gonna be crushed and burned? Absolutely. But it'll suck more if someone gets a bad BT mag, and I feel like RED's not in the business of of inconveniencing their users and pissing people off.

Actually...... they kinda are in the business of pissing people off.

I get it, I get it.
All of that makes sense - the one time something happens etc.

Pie in the sky thinking, for sure.

Thanks for weighing in.

Than can we buy decommissioned mags as door stops or paperweights?

Or perhaps as leveling shims on dolly track in 20 years... along with SxS...P2....
