  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

BSRT Follow Focus

So can we expect the BSRT follow focus with all those accessories to be 2250 USD? :wink5:

I'm gonna try like hell to get the price down without compromising the quality. It may mean losing some extras (knobs, whips etc) but keeping core functionality (reversing, brackets, support for all MB and camera types) in there for a sweet price is the main goal.

Hey thanks to everybody who came through to the reduser event and said hello.

I ended up with just under 30 reservations for the first batch. I will be contacting all you risk lovers in the next day or so to get your deposits.

I'm still taking reservations up to 50 units for our first production batch. If you are interested, please email me at whatsup [a] brstcinema.com. We're requiring a $350 deposit for people to get in line. This is of course refundable at any point if you think we're taking too long or you're unhappy for any reason.

The plus side is that if you want to go for the whole package I promise to keep things locked into a $3k price point. My hope is that I can let people choose to customize their kits to better suit their needs and spend less money. It's gonna be sweet. :)

I spent a lot of time at NAB looking at new lenses and thinking about how to improve the idea of the follow focus. On the airplane, I had a brainstorm to add modular axle extensions to the unit so it could be sized for any mattebox or usage. I think we will be able to make something that works for every camera and will offer a reasonable entry point and upgrade path for people who are just starting out when the parts are finally offered ala cart.

Anyway, I've posted a PDF of the new unit design at my website: http://www.bsrtcinema.com

On Tuesday I will be looking at and comparing every follow focus on the market at a facility in NYC with some 1st AC friends. It's our goal to outdo everything that has come before and make sure we work on all the glass in the market. Feel free to email me requests.

It will take approximately 3 weeks to redesign the unit and get a new prototype built. People that saw my unit at NAB (which only took about 40 hours to design and build) can attest that I am fully serious and that we've got the skills to pay the bills. If this new design passes muster, we'll send this new design out for production machining down the street from our shop. No waiting for months with me. I want this thing done already.

BTW, special thanks to Mark P for taking the first units. Once again, Offhollywood gets the prize.

Unit so far has exceeded my expectations.

On the back of the unit is says - "Made in Brooklyn by American Men"

LOVE IT.

I look forward to putting the first four in the hands of some of NYC's best ACs for the hardcore field testing. I suspect my order will increase.

Mark, your support really means a lot to me. Much appreciated, sir.

I'm curious the market position you are going for. Arri is pretty damned respected and your units are more than theirs so I'd have to assume you're claiming to be noticeably superior to an Arri. In what aspects? I use a FF2, which even for being an older unit is built like a tank and operates wonderfully.

I think you need to check on ARRI pricing. Add up all the ARRI components to get what the BSRT is - when you look at the ARRI FF4 price - make sure you are including Right Focus Extension, Right Focus Knob, Cranks, Whips, and Lens Drive Gears

Shawn - I'll report the good and bad from some top AC's who will put it against the FF4. If it doesn't offer a price/performance benefit over the FF4 - it will be a dead product. Stay tuned -

So Clayton is shipping FF, Right Focus Extension, Right Focus Knob, Cranks, Whips, and Lens Drive Gears in one kit for $3k for all of that?

That is the goal. We built a pretty decent unit without breaking a sweat. I think we you see our design demonstrated in different configurations you'll get it.

And, don't worry, I use an FF4 at my job all day long. I'm pretty familiar with what Arri's products can and cannot do and what they cost.

Shawn, I think I spent about 6K on my FF4. I need to get a whip and crank still.

Was that some time ago? Group buys and unofficial discounts (via a good phone call to Abelcine or whomever) seem to be the way to go, but even just browsing to Filmtools I can add up an FF4, 19mm adaptor, right hand extension, right hand wheel and crank for $4390.20

The devil is in the details Shawn.

yes Indeed am looking for a FF. nowish.

We are debating about including a reversing gear. I need to analyze how this contributes to the cost but it's still on the table.

Yesterday while shooting using a Z jib in a handheld sort of way, we had to mount the follow focus upside down on a R1. Reversible gearing would have made life a bit easier.

Please consider adding that functionality.

I want one. Any updates from BSRT?
Seems a few people have these but no updated info on their site...

This whole idea of announcing stuff on forums and then not deliver is becoming really old and sad.
