  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

"Brindabellas" Stunning Infared landscapes shot on modified infared RED EPIC

Here's what our IR-only OLPF looks like. Its a fair bit more sophisticated than just a 720 IR lens filter, so it looks a little exotic :)

Glen / John,

regarding eye damage are there any other scenario's that could cause harm?

Sidney - only really potential issues with DSLRs when you filter the lens and then view the image through the (optical) viewfinder. So you 'd be shooting stills not motion.

Visible light is pretty much zero with a 720nm filter and by the time you get to an 830nm filter on the lens you can barely even see the sun in the frame (through the optical viewfinder). Your iris opens right up as it thinks it's dark - IR wavelenghts still come in the optical viewfinder and can damage your eye. Not an issue at all if you use a RED as no optical light path to an optical viewfinder. Also no issues if you use an IR OLPF or a modded cam with filtration on the OLPF / sensor - rather than the lens. Even with a DSLR only a potential issue with stills as the mirror is locked up for motion and you would be looking at the LCD .... Only time I've ever had an issue was testing out an 830nm filter one day on a modded DSLR where I shot a series of shots left to right and included the sun in the last couple ... for some reason I kept my eye open in the viewfinder while shooting the sequence even though it was basically black! Longish exposures zapped my eye when the sun was in the frame....

Having said that about IR it's also potentially damaging looking at the sun through any camera / lens / filter! Just with heavy IR filtration on the lens you may not realise you are actually doing it!

Cheers

Looks awesome John - just ordered one ... Got a cool little test shoot coming up in July for this baby ;)

Love to see this in 4K. Friend and big fan of all Glen Ryan's work.

Hey Will

We're going to bring the whole thing out in 4K - with a couple of different options in terms of bitrate / compression etc ... Just working on the details now :) Its a shame the whole Odemax / Redray distribution thing never worked out as initially outlined - as would have been a good option for slightly crazy stuff like this! But we'll see what we can come up with...

Cheers

Glen
