I have a shoot that takes place in an above-ground parking structure. bouncing sun won't be possible because of the we're under a roof, and even a small generator is not an option on this shoot for various reasons.

i am wondering what is the brightest daylight-balanced light i can rent that runs off a battery. as far as i know it's a litepanels astra, but maybe there's something better that i haven't heard of.

i've seen a few LED fresnels (zylight, hexolux) that can run off a battery which would be great, but unfortunately i can'tt seem to find them for rent anywhere. if anyone knows of something battery-powered with more output than an astra that's readily available for rent let me know!

There are a lot of choices out there. Would help out to know exactly what you want the light to provide in so far as pattern, area...

The Hive that Matthew mentioned is a good choice.

You can also look at the remote phosphor units built by Cineo and BBS Area 48.
Very effective power wise and high output - desired color temp is simple - just swap out panels.
However, consider these to be "soft" sources.

If you are looking for more control, consider using HMI's.
The Joker 200 and Dedolight 200 HMI's are just two of a number that can run off DC ballasts - both have a great selection of accessories.
DC ballasts are readily available in most rental houses.

I have a small collection of ARRI 125 & 200 HMI's (both Fresnel and PAR's) that will run off DC power.
For these, I usually use the Anton Bauer VCLX batteries for the power supply.

In a parking garage, the 125 pocket par with light tube is a great choice as it can be integrated into the scene easily.

aadyntech Jab, strongest Battery powered LED.

Thanks for the recommendations! What kind of battery do I need for the Wasp, and what sort of run time can I expect per battery?

there ARE methods for getting a V-mount to power the wasp, they have larger batteries that will last for 4 hours +, Call Hive they are VERY helpful and friendly. I believe borrowlenses rents their products as well

call hive tho, they sometimes rent direct, depending on where you are..

If you are close to Buffalo give me a call @@

thanks, i'll give them a call monday. i'm in LA so I can probably pick up directly from them.

The hives are great. Flicker free up to something like 100K+ fps.

The jabs are good too and they have a 4 hr battery pack. Be sure to pack some minus green. 1/4.

I own a few of the hive's they really are beautiful, the low draw is killer, looks great on camera, no flicker, basically puts out the same as a 400w joker

Matt, which Hives do you have? We've used them before, and love them.

I use the new Wasp Par lights, have a set of them with ac/dc power. Absolutely love them. STAY TUNED FOR behind the scenes footage from my latest feature lenth project featuring hive lights @@. I should be done soon.

Cool, the Bee's look really interesting to me - especially with the speed rings!

the source four barrel with the wasp is incredible.. one thing i just cant say enough about these lights is the low draw.. i had 4 of these plugged into the wall of a house built in 1890.. no problems..

it's funny it took some time for my gaffer and other crew members to become believers, but after a week everyone wanted a hive T-shirt @@

if you are interested you should really send the people at hive an email or a call, Ken and Robert at Hive are extremely helpful and fair

Not sure if they will have enough to Juice, but we use Zylight Z8s these are an LED Fresnel, power is most likely around 200-250hmi output. We run off V locks. No flicker and good CRI.

We own two, but will be buying more......

Just a thought... even an above ground parking lot should have wall power, although it may be under lock and key. Just sayin'.
