  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Bright Tangerine VIV or Misfit?

That is awesome news, Curt...thanks for the update!! I will have to look more seriously at some of the Misfits for our school cameras...

Hey Tom,

If the school is more centered towards cinema use I'd suggest the Viv. Industry standard for productions is swing away, so you might as well get them used to that way of working. If the school is more ENG/Docu geared then go with the Misfit. In a cinema setting taking on and off a mattebox with every lens change is extremely inefficient. Just thought I'd throw that out there. One of the benefits of film school for me was getting access to industry standard tools to hone my skills for real world productions.

I have a Viv and Strummer but honestly now that the Viv offers swing away that will be my first choice. Good luck with the decision!

Thanks, Matt! We definitely are geared toward cine-style shooting as opposed to ENG or docs. I just bought a VIV for my personal Scarlet, so I'll have a good chance to see how that works out before I buy the school's units.

Where can I get more details about this and the cost? From the few pictures posted here, it looks nice. I want to use a matt box for use with still lenses as well as with cinema lenses. So definitely a mattebox which is supported by rods would be good. Would love to use it on 19mm rods.

Viv is 15mm and 19mm in both studio or standard config as well as clamp on and now swing away as an option. You can contact Curt, he's one of the distributors and can give you pricing based on the setup you need as well as specific details.

Just received my VIV and I gotta say that the build quality is awesome! I took it completely apart and put it back together, and everything fit perfectly...really well engineered. I haven't shot with it yet, but I'm looking forward to seeing it work with my Contax and Nikons. I think I'll probably go for the swing-away upgrade when available, but for now, the rod-mount seems to work fine...looks like I can just slide the VIV forward on the rods in order to change lenses.

Just saw that Bright Tangerine is stocking a 5" VIV now:
http://www.brighttangerine.com/product-detail/viv-kits/5/23

Anyone have any more info on it? I'm guess It's just a slightly taller VIV?
Just sold my Redrock box, gonna pick one of these up in the next two months, so certainly keen to make sure I have all the info. I think I'm still leaning towards the "standard" VIV, but just want to make sure that there aren't any differences aside from supporting 5x5 filters. Would appreciate any info that anyone might have!
Thanks,

-Harry

Harry, I think you're mistaken. VIV is 4x5.65... there are two kits listed, one is 2-stage, one is 3-stage. Unless I'm missing something on that page.... but I looked thoroughly and only see the two VIV kits.

The Viv is a fantastic mattebox, as you can see from the discussion here on REDUSER. You'll be quite impressed with it over that bulky, flimsy Redrock for sure!

I believe the 5" is the "newer" version 2 with the vertical height adjustment (to raise the mattebox and or lower it to match up with your lenses) (We have the original pre height adjustment version). Either way both are 4x5.65. The swing away arm , new rod system to make rods pass under the viv along with extensions to come out the front (http://www.brighttangerine.com/product-detail/viv--viv-5-15-mm-forx--rod-extension-pair-_-designed-to-slide-underneath-viv-and-viv-5--length-3.5/205/2/5/45)(http://www.brighttangerine.com/product-detail/viv--viv-5-15-mm-forx--lightweight-rods--pair-_--designed-to-interface-with-extension-forx-length-3.0--6.5/206/2/5/45) (http://www.brighttangerine.com/product-detail/viv--viv-5-15-mm-forx--lightweight-rods--pair-_--designed-to-interface-with-extension-forx------length-6.0--9.5/207/2/5/45) (http://www.brighttangerine.com/product-detail/viv--viv-5-15-mm-forx--lightweight-rods--pair-_--designed-to-interface-with-extension-forx-----length-8.5-12.0/208/2/5/45), hard matte light shields (http://www.brighttangerine.com/product-detail/viv--mattes-18_20-mm--24_28-mm-32_40-mm-50_75-mm-85_180-mm/111/2/5/46) and the other couple of new accessories including an optional top flag similar to the Strummer kit top flag are now available (http://www.brighttangerine.com/product-detail/viv--viv-5_-carbon-fibre-top-flag-inc-flag-mounts-with-dual-variable-side-wings/190/2/5/46). I believe the 5" refers to the new version 2 with the height adjustment option but I could be wrong. Contact a distributor like Curt or contact Bright Tangerine directly. They are usually quick to respond.

Thanks for all the comments! It doesn't sound like the Misfit is really the best tool for the job when used with still lenses. SInce that's what I'll be shooting with most of the time, I guess I'll have to save my pennies for the VIV or look at less expensive rod-mounted alternatives.

Curt or Matt...I really like the idea of the swing-away bracket...any idea how much it's going to cost?

Late reply sorry! Know you already bought a Viv but just in case anyone else was wondering, the swing away arm is $590 (http://www.brighttangerine.com/product-detail/viv--viv-5--production-swing-away-core--_-connect-either-19mm-15mm-strummer-studio-brackets/189/2/5/45) and in stock now!

Just to clarify...

Viv 5" is a taller version of Viv. It is slightly larger so it can take 5x5 filters, and is more geared towards ENG.

The vertical height adjustment is a new feature which now comes with both Viv and Viv 5".

There are 2 kits for Viv, and 2 kits for Viv 5". You can buy the 2-stage and add a second stage at a later date if you want to.

The swing-away arm is now available. It connects to the matte box via a dove-tail mount so you can quickly remove it for clamp-on use.

If you have any technical questions, just send an email to info@brighttangerine.com and in most cases, you'll get a personal response within 24 hours.

I also just noticed Bright Tangerine now offers pretty much every lens diameter clamp on ring and doughnut possible for their matte boxes. Don't forget you can use the Strummer 138-114mm rubber bellows donut on the Viv which takes a 138mm round filter and also then can be adapted to any of the screw in donuts. So you have tons of options. http://brighttangerine.com/category/matte-box/viv/donuts/2/5/47/

Must say that I have been pretty impressed with the Strummer, and talked ot Andy about a lighter clamp on option, problem is that I never use a MB without the 138mm Rotating Polarizer Filter, and for this I have only be using the Strummer, but now with the use of Cinemoded Still light weight glass, I might rethink it and try out both the Misfit and the Viv2.

Curt, thanks again for the great explanations you give about the Bright Tangerine products, after all it is because of you that I sold all my Arri MB's including the MB20II & MB28, and opted for the BT Strummer in their place and never looked back!!

Just got word about a retrofit for the Misfit allowing for a pretty nice new swing-away feature.

I really like the Misfit and have been using it on several shoots lately as a lightweight clip on box. The swing away feature just made it incredibly flexible...two thumbs up:

I just bought a pair of Forx (the unique cutdown 15mm tubes that slide underneath the VIV shell) and a pair of extension tubes for them. No one in the US had the Forx yet (it was a new product introduced at CineGear) and I desperately needed them for an outdoor shoot...in 2 days. With amazing personal service from Curt Pair, at Picture This Prod., and from Rob Eagle at Bright Tangerine, we figured out what sizes I needed, got the order placed and processed, and then had them overnighted to me from the UK. They arrived the morning of my shoot and worked brilliantly. I am a very happy camper, and will highly recommend Bright Tangerine products and customer service to anyone!!

The following may be of some help, deciding among the three below pieces:

Re. the weight questions:

VIV 5" 2stage 1lb 2oz (incl. filter trays)
3stage 1lb 6oz (incl. filter trays)

VIV 4" 2stage 1lb 1oz (incl. filter trays)
3stage 1lb 5oz (incl. filter trays)

Strummer 2stage 2lb 14oz (incl. filter trays)
3stage 4lb 4oz (incl. filter trays)
(this is incl. the swing away, where the VIV doesn't inlcude that weight)

the VIV swing away bracket weights: 1lb 1oz

The QC on these pieces is yop notch and the innovations continue.

Thank you very much

Fury

Trevor, the new '5" VIV' is designed to accommodate newer HD wide angle lens, for guys in the ENG/EFP world. The lead filter is a 5x5. It can be "switched", but the tray is that big to eliminate vignetting.
