  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Is the sensor on the fixed 8x Scarlet upgradable and therefore future-proof like the Epics?

Sensors aren't upgradeable. Brains are.

The bigger the sensor (and pixels), the less advantageous is BSI. Thats why you see them almost exclusively on phones. It allows for easier global shutter, though.

You "upgrade" the brain by replacing it.

I feel like you guys are giving me the runaround from my first question with semantics. Hoping for a real answer this time if it is known: Is the brain on the 8x Fixed Scarlet replaceable and does RED plan on offering hardware updates as they have talked about with the Epic or is the Scarlet less "future-proof" because of it's low price point. Thanks.

I think the "obsolescence is obsolete" slogan would apply only to the Epic product line. I'd be willing to cut some slack on that for the Epic also. if RED comes up with something that would make the Epic philosophy "obsolete", I'd say, "Go for it, but don't make yourself sick trying". With the Epic, we will have enough to make 35mm film obsolete.

Carl - The brain is replaceable as such, because any accessory gear you get for it and additional modules will then also work with the new brain you get. However, as the Scarlet 2/3" FIXED brain has it's lens attached to it (as the name fixed would suggest), you can't swap bodies and use the existing lens obviously.

Epic also isn't 'upgradeable' in terms of the main unit being upgradeable (at this point, outside of course firmware improvements). it's upgradeable because rather than buying a whole new camera, you can just replace the brain and all the other parts (redmote, I/O module, side handle etc.) will simply connect to the new brain.

Scarlet brains are just as modular, expandable, and upgradeable via adding new modules or other components or replacing the brain with a new brain as the Epics. For the most part they will share the same add on modules and accessories. The brain itself with the sensor and its associated electronics is not supposed to be upgradeable via replacing internal components for any of the new cameras. When it comes time to upgrade you sell or keep the old brain and buy a new one. The labor to disassemble and rebuild a brain with new components would likely cost more than the body hardware anyway, compared to buying an assembly lline production model so there would be no real cost savings and little point.
Software upgrades are free and regular and with Red 1 have improved performance over the life of the cameras more than buying a new camera from most companies would .

Increased dynamic range, angular light acceptance, 100% pixel coverage. This all sounds like a no-brainer for Jim Jannard and his wizards. If Epic is this good now, imagine what this can do in a new brain.

I have zero training in sensor engineering, but it seems logical and obvious to me as well to have photosensitive elements closer to the surface than electronics...

Is there a reason why this hasn't been tried before?

Why ?? Are you surer about this, does this mean that a future red sensor cannot possibly use this Back Side Illumination technology??? I think i would like to hear a bit about this from someone from the RED team, guys if you are listening please reply....................

i am still waiting for an answer if anyone can tell me please reply...........

With the news of the future red dragon monstro sensor i even more eager to know about it,i am still waiting for a reply for the back side illumination tech i asked about,is it true that it cannot be used on a large sensor, because if it can be used on the current sensor it can increase the native dynamic range of 13.5 stops to easily a 15.5 or 16 stops from what i have read so far.... eagerly waiting for a reply plsssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss

I dont know if you have been keeping up on this...but RED is keeping a tight lip on ALL up and coming products. Now that Sony has verified that REDs 4k endeavor is a legitimate one by releasing their own 4k camera...Competition is closely watching RED. So I believe for this reason, they are not revealing any secrets about their new stuff...why give the competition the upper hand?

This link is where Jannard talks a bit about it.

No salomon i dont want to know any specs on the red dragon monstro sensor,i just want know that is it true that the back side illumination technology cannot be used on a large s35 sized cmos sensor, as a guy mentioned over here few posts earlier. You know what i think this thread has become a bit old and the topic of this thread is verry connect to a future red sensor,so i think i will start a thread on this topic of BSI or Back Side Illumination.......
