  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

BOXX rocks Redcode on Intel Skull Trail!!

Jeff is referring to the realtime SDI output problems with inaccurate TC that the 4500 quadro card were experiencing. It appeared that it was a problem coming from the Nvidia card architecture that was also an issue with many other high end grading products relying on the quadros. The new 4600 architecture has completely resolved this issue.

correct. 4600 and 5600 = all good.

Its a fantastic achievement indeed but my 8 core MacPro can do it too. So its nothing specific to the Boxx box.

My mac can playback the 2k QT wrapper, with the quality in FCP set to medium, not HIGH. There is a BIG difference. To get the best quality out of the 2k wrapper in FCP you HAVE to render the file to another codec. The RT playback is not best quality. Some one feel free to correct me about this, but I am pretty sure about it.

I ran some tests a month or two ago and the RT playout to tape was much softer than rendering to prorez and laying to tape. We compared images off of an HDcam in a telecine bay.

I have also heard rumors that a rendered DPX from FCP is not as good as DPX from REDalert or Scratch, but I have not compared these images yet.

Just remember, that not matter what setting or codec you render to in FCP (at this time) from a QT wrapper - you are NOT doing a debayer. Period. The wrappers don't debayer. They do a "down and dirty" extraction designed for speed. So, although the quality is very good - there is aliasing - it is NOT the same as using a debayer - and certainly miles from using a FULL QUALITY debayer.

I hope to see the ability to have the option to render in an FCP timeline with a true full debayer - and I suspect that is what the _F will do. We shall see.

hopefully that will happen Mark,
i don´t want to keep listenig to editors, they have a high frequenzy that i am not able to get away from it just steaks in my ears.
"But how can I do my work with out knowing what realy looks like...!!":ranting2:
A lot of diferent phrases that come with the same face even when you give then a solution, and most of the times ends with we will see
Thanks god until now no problem ... that couldn´t be resolved.

You sure as hell don't need a full quality debayer to "see what it really looks like?" -

look at shawn nelsons new 2k redrelay footage, there is the _F. proxy

Hey Mark - thanks for correcting me. I guess I was half right. The RT playback and the render are different qualities, but even the render is not best quality (from the debayer). Soon to change I hope (as well as LOG support in the wrapper).

" with a true full debayer "

"A Bayer filter selectively blocks certain wavelengths of light before reaching the sensor so that each pixel is sensitive to either red, green or blue light. These selective color filters are arranged in a pattern called a 'Bayer pattern' which allows a computer to later guess the value of the two blocked colors of a pixel based on the value of its neighbors.

This process of educated guessing is refered to as demosaicing, bayer interpolation, or debayering. Images that are recorded as a Bayer pattern are sometimes called raw."

That is what I found on debayering. I understand that part, but what I do not understand is when and how you debayer and why you do it in realtime...

1) I am assuming the quicktime proxies are RGB and not the full 12bits? What are the specs on the proxies?

2) AFAIK you cannot natively edit RAW (non RGB) R3D files?. R3D files are RAW bayered data, that need to be debayered in either REDcine or REDalert to be RGB so you can edit them right? So how, by using software, does one debayer?

Thanks and sorry for my ignorance. :bye2:

right now, there is no redcode raw editing software in full quality.

you can use fcp with lower resolutions or lower quality debayer (up to 2K). Or one can abuse scratch as editing system, but that would rather be unclever.

redcode raw support for other applications so far isnt allowed by red, as they made exclusive deals with assimilate and apple, which shall end this april. support from other applications shall be allowed now shortly. functional, open and stable raw editing workflows however do exist, cineform is one of the pioneers of these.
