  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

BOXX rocks Redcode on Intel Skull Trail!!

Y

BTW, Sanjin, I would be prepared to bet money that a new 8-core Mac running Windows in Boot Camp mode would work very well indeed with a Quadro SDI.

Also, how much is Skulltrail? Some of the prices guessed at on Tomshardware etc seemed ludicrously high - eg the same as just getting an 8-core Mac Pro. If it were at all close, why not get a Mac plus Bootcamp? To me, the amazing value in PCs is in the midrange.

About Skulltrail I think like this:

If it's a real value then Apple would put the Skulltrail in the next MacPro update in June.

Also I don't think so that Boxx is a more exclusive Intel's customer then Apple.

We should not play here a "kindergarden" and also don't forget that Steve Jobs (Apple's CEO)

and Paul Otellini (Intel's CEO) have strong business and private friendship.

For the record, BOXX sold the Intel chip in Apple latest, top-of-the-line MacPro six months before Apple put them in a box.

BOXX makes high-end workstations for the industry, tuned for specific applications. APPLE has a different business model.

Then also last year Apple has got exclusive 8 core chip to introduce in the market.

Boxx is very OK if you run high end PC apps.

But Apple will soon catch up this high end PC market too.

Then game over.

Toshiba just gave up HD-DVD.

Moguls are still moguls in the industry and as we know well that also Apple is a huge and powerful mogul.

There will ALWAYS be the need for companies making specialized systems for the high-end.

Mogul or not, APPLE likes to sell to the "masses". It's just a different business model.

People who buy BOXX systems do pay more - but they do it for the customer service and "industry specific" expertise and support. It's a totally different animal then going to the ... "Genius Bar"!

For the record, our new facility will feature a specifically designed cocktail of APPLE MAC PROs, BOXX and custom built workstations - because we find specific advantages to all there in specific situations.

I agree. Apple has many good design goals, top-end performance is´t one of them. They offer a good mid-class to upper-class portfolio of pcs, and they have nice cheap prices on their 8 cores. But for sheer power, there were many 16 core desktop workstation PCs long before apple introduced Intels dual Xeon with 8 cores.

Fully agree. Our standard NLEs have 16 internal harddisk and are almost noiseless, have internal redudant power supplys etc. features you certainly won´t find on massmarket pcs as apple or dell, as most buyers don´t want them. (the new 8 core mac pro is pretty silent as well btw)

custom built gets more and more interesting. In the 90ties we had only certified systems and a few frankensteins for the usual behind-the-curtain tasks (routing, firewall, loadbalancing, backup etc). Meanwhile, the pc x86 architecture has become so compatible and flexible that even some customer frontline systems are pure custombuilts.

Btw marc, have you already decided about the SAN for your new facility?
Will you go for 4K uncompressed capable SAN? I am pretty undecided in that aspect yet.

Sometimes really good cocktail can blow you mind and creativity

(I mean here metaphorically in a positive and techno way).

The interesting thing is that in a few months, q3, I think is when I read, the above nehalem processors will be out. with 1-8+ cores and 1-16+ threads per processor, a dual socket Mac Pro or Boxx system is going to rock with 32+ threads going on at once. I can't help but think that Red transcoding times are just a mere inconvenience at this time, but won't be around very long at all.

Yeah, Nehalem will be nice but we won't see more than 4 cores on a chip until late in '09.

The big lap forward for Nehalem will be:

integrated memory controllers &
Tons of PCI-E lanes (which means LOTS of 16X PCI-E slots on mainboards)

I've actually run Scratch_REDnode on both 16 & 32 core systems (8 X AMD Opterons) in the lab but the code didn't seem to scale well past 8 cores, which is actually quite common. There may well be multithreading optimizations that Assimilate and other companies can make as these types of systems become more common-place.

We see better performance (both playback & transcoding) on our 8-core prototype @ 4Ghz.

Adam,

We see better performance (both playback & transcoding) on our 8-core prototype @ 4Ghz.

are you able to disclose any of the system components used in the prototype ala graphics (GPU) cards used etc etc?

Also, what sort or performance rates (fps) were you achieving at 4K with the prototype system?

Hiya,

I really can't discuss specific details about the system as it's still in the prototype phase and could (and probably will) change as far as specific components, settings and performance numbers.

I CAN tell you that it works GREAT for realtime native 4K red footage @ 2K/high.

Obviously, transcoding is pretty fast as well...but with realtime layoff via SDI to HDCAM SR or D5-2K, transcoding .r3d files may be a thing of the past for some workflows/projects.

cheers,

Hi Adam,
sounds great! I look forward to reviewing this system once it is finally released.

Just reinforcing Mark:

Boxx is a bit spendy. (We personally decided against it and went white box for our last round of upgrades. Sorry Boxx!).

But if you want/need support they are untouchable. And they don't just support the hardware. They are knowledgeable and helpful with the software they sell with the hardware. You have a copy of combustion on your Boxx workstation and it's giving you some sort of graphcis glitch. They'll try to help you get it working.

We had a power supply fail on an old system. Gave them a call and got a replacement (out of warranty) asap.

They stand behind their products and they even are often willing to help with things that aren't their products. They're one of the only companies who deserve to be able to say they sell "systems" and recognize that installing windows and supporting you up to the login screen just doesn't cut it.

Hey Off,
Quick question. Have you experianced any of the normal problems of laying off to SR from the Nvidia card or are you going through a render to then layoff via a bluefish ?
