I recently picked up a used RED KOMODO Wing Grip (790-0684). It was in pretty good shape, but it was missing the original mounting screws.
At first, I didn't think much of it. They're just M4 screws, right? Figured I'd grab a couple of regular M4 socket head screws and be good to go. Nope. They wouldn't go through the mounting holes like I expected.
So I asked a buddy of mine who's pretty experienced with machining and mechanical stuff. He explained that the Wing Grip actually uses captive screws, which have a different shank design than regular screws. The threaded holes in the grip help keep those screws from falling out when you take the handle off.
I ended up doing a little more digging on threaded holes and how they're machined. That's when it clicked that just matching the M4 thread size wasn't enough.
After checking the original hardware specs, I narrowed it down to M4×12 mm captive socket head screws. And sure enough, that did the trick!
