Good for you Deane! This is the kind of care RED owners need.

The horror stories come from the people who "just don't care" and as a result I get producers saying "I've heard that there are big problems with RED". Then I have to convince them that if it is treated properly there are no issues!

I charge a fair price for my camera. It is in excellent working order with all the right accessories to make it a battle ready camera.

I would never rent from a bottom feeder.

By the way other Red owners... do you not expect things like this to happen? There more than 5,000 cameras out there, and probably a huge saturation of them in NY. This is just the free market at work, no need to be pissed off- people will still rent from you because of you, not because you have wal-mart prices. Competition is a good thing- I remember when the first 25 Reds came out and I wanted to rent it for a music video and people wanted ~$2200/day plus a mandatory Tech.

Red Rental

Red Rental

I don't think $2200/day for a Red package is so bad considering I have spent well over $100K on the body, accessories, lenses, mattebox, follow focus, head/sticks, etc. Not to mention insurance and maintenance.

appreciate the words hunter.

my camera is in perfect working order. anyone interested in renting it are welcome to shoot a test with it.

Hunter has it right. It's a free market economy... People will charge what they wish. And it comes down to marketing in a way they think will meet their goals. Everyone is criticizing Alex, but I don't actually see anyone specifically asking what he offers for what price. It's all about what equipment and services are offered and how it fits in with the needs of who is renting.

Drastically undercutting the competition can lead to other problems such as tarnishing one's reputation or inspiring others to not work with you down the road. It's his choice, let him follow that path and see where it leads him. My guess is he's a hobbyist that is willing to rent out his very basic RED kit wherever, whenever for nearly whatever to help pay it off. Alex, forgive the general ass-umption, but that is the image you project when you post as the "bottom feeder".

price ? depends where you are on the pay scale ( ladder) ... if you have not been in the business, have no contacts, just spent 25k on equipment, then you do what you have to do to get a return on your investment - more then likely you'll be dealing with NO - to very low budgets ( which were probably going to shoot on a hvx200 ) = you get a little $$ and the Producer gets 4k image (how good image will depend on DP) ...

IMO the "bottom feeder" is not going to take work away from somebody who has been in the business and has contacts .... most of us at one time started off at the bottom and worked for cheap to get experience etc ....

i don't see how different rental rates would give a bad rep to RED ??
i don't know how it is today in LA but 82-97 free camera's could be had from just about any rental house ..this could be rental house doing a favor for a DP , AC , producer, actor etc ... panavision has been very generous over the years letting free camera's go out on projects ( far more then their 1st filmmakers program ) ....

It's not competitive rental rates I'm talking about, it is the "I don't care" attitude. If he "just doesn't care", I'd take this as a reflection of "possibly" how you might get treated renting from him.

That said - I don't know Alex and am not making any judgement calls on his gear or rates - the attitude is what got me.

fair play to alex ....but a small part of production budget is its camera hire...i just think charge a price that you know means you can buy in back up if need be without being out of pocket....and give them a great service that means they come back for more....Alex will be busier this way ....if you wonna give a better deal offer to do there rushes conversation all something in the price.
RED still scares a lot of producer..help them sleep at night and your be busy..the fact that they have no film to devlop and TK to do has already saved them loads...TRUST and RELIABILITY is the key another $10 dollars at least will balance on you and your camera and your ability to deliver

And get that cameras back focus Columnated before you hire it out if you haven't already all 3 red that have been delivered to me have needed there back focus aligned ....on a shoot the other day 10 red cameras were hired from various places 7 we're soft when the rushes we're projected (my guess is those 7 hadn't had there back focus adjusted)
i'm not knocking the RED guys there brillant!!! but like all cameras the back focus are the owners problem

It bears repeating that if anyone bought a camera to become an instant rental house, they are in for a tough road ahead. Plenty of people are going to start making these offers, not the best business choice in the world and certainly won't make any friends in the industry.

Probably will wind up with students renting most of the time anyway with that attitude. Who would want to put a professional shoot on the line with the I don't care mentality. If the camera goes down in the middle of a shoot then what, no other RED owner in NYC is going to help you.

Even before I would say to have respect for the product or respect for the other RED owners out there looking to rent out their gear, I would beg you to have some respect for yourself! Do you really want to consider yourself a "bottomfeeder"?

I'm not sure, but I think I was just insulted.
