We were on a production this weekend, and had a problem where, when the camera had been powered off for more than a few minutes, the camera would have difficulty booting up. It would power on, and the rear LCD panel would say "Booting..." but it was never move beyond that. After about 20 attempts at power-cycling, it would eventually start up.

It was a relatively cold shoot (38-48' F/3-8' C) in the desert at night, but nothing that the camera shouldn't be able to handle.

Today, after brining the camera back to the shop, we plugged everything in, and the same issue. On a cold boot (but still room temp) the camera came up to "Booting..." and stalled.

Has anyone seen this before? I'll be going back to the shop and will put in a call with RED, but thought I'd drop a line here since I had the computer handy (but not the camera).

Is your LCD monitor plugged in? There have been issues booting while the LCD monitor or EVF have been plugged in. After you see the serial numbers and stuff you can plug them in. Works every time for us.

Yeah it would be best to try a couple booting cycles with nothing plugged in except the power source. Let us know how it turns out. Please don't hesitate to contact us, we'll do all we can to get you back to fully operational.

I had the same bloody problem - this fixed it for me (was a tip from another menu in a similar thread I started).

Unplug everything including power.
Strike the power button five times waiting a second between each strike.
Plug the power back in. Turn on.
Wait till the fan turns off.
Plug everything else back in.

Here's to build 16!

I've seen this a couple of times, but the cam powered up normally after a restart. So same here - excited to see 16 soon... :)

Same problem here. Booting in infinity. Fixed with Mylreas woodoo touch though. Maybe it's a good way to power down exactly everything in the camera? I think we have to have a look on this issue RED - not fun if you are out on the set (which I wasn't this time)!

Before the RED started booting (and booting and booting and booting and booting), I accidently turned off the power when I should have hit the exit button, to come out from playback mode on the camera (from harddrive). Could it be the cause?

Is it possible for the power button to blow? Or the 'mother board' to go as well (may I assume it has one?)? Our Red isn't powering either, may have to send it in :o(

I had this same problem last week while doing some testing with nikons. I was using the cradle and red batteries. When I bought the camera I ordered four of the bricks. Two arrived with ziplock baggies and two without. When i attempted to boot the camera with the non-ziplock bricks, I would get the booting.... and then freeze. I shut it down and tried one of the bricks with ziplock baggie and it booted normally. I continued the test by trying all the bricks and even the AC Adaptor and the the charger. The only time I ran into the freeze was with the non-ziplock baggie bricks.

I called Red and my awesome rep Nate issued a call ticket. I sent then the two offending bricks back to Red. Nate called a day or so ago after testing them on their studio camera. They had no problems with booting using my returned bricks. But Red - God I love this company - sent me two brand new bricks and are keeping my old ones for their in-house use even though they did not have to do that. Now thats customer service!!! They also told me that they are looking into the boot freeze thing and that I should let them know if I run into any more problems.

The strange thing here is that I only experienced the problem with two bricks and that the problem did not present itself with two others nor with AC power. After reading all the posts in this thread I am more confused as to the root of the problem. Any thoughts anyone?

PS I had the LCD plugged in every time. Just changed out bricks and power source.

It's Backkkkkkkkkk!!! I just tried to power up my Red with the AC Power adaptor and it happened again. I got the "booting......" freeze again. It appears on the rear camera LCD with a grey background. Nothing appears on the Red LCD. I had the Red LCD plugged in while booting the camera. I tried disconnecting the LCD cable and then rebooted. Everything worked.

Has anyone else had this problem. My concern is that the problem will get worse and eventually the camera will stop booting altogether.

Had the same problem - solved it by simply unplugging the Red Drive before booting up (make sure the Red Drive is unplugged at the camera end rather than at the drive end). Once the camera's fully booted up, then plug in the Red Drive. I wonder if it's a Red Drive related problem because I was using two and the hanging "booting" thing only happened with one of the drives & not the other.

Every 2 or 3 times, my camera won't start, just showing "booting" at the rear lcd...

Power down and try again usually solve the problem.

anoying though...
