  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Bomb EVF Shipping

Guys, I understand all these points ... they are all valid and it's clear Red is going through some growing pains and wants product in the hands of its customers. But please step back for a moment and consider this: We are sooooooooo lucky that this has evolved into such an incredible community where Jim and other team members come here to listen and interact -- as well as people like Gibby, Mark and Ketch going out of their way to share ... and I fear that if the forum turns into one giant bitch-fest it's going to sour things and make everyone (both Red staff and Redusers) not feel as enthusiastic about sharing here. Is that what we want? We are ALL aware of supply, timing, fulfillment issues (none more than the Red team) but it's clear that complaining excessively here not only doesn't help -- it hurts the spirit of the community. There's a right place and a proper channel for complaining or venting ... but I don't think that this is it.

From a bussiness point of view, here is how I am working around a simple back-order issue, and I am sure I have my name beside every item listed on the back order list. Think a head and be prepared to purchase some third party gear to get by. I know Red Leader is on this, I know the team is on this with due diligence. I look forward to the day my name is called and I receive a superior product. Till then, I get by and the bussiness continues.

As the old saying goes "live by the sword, die by the sword".

RED get an amazing amount of benefit from having an open forum like this... it creates a huge amount of free marketing (dare I say it, hype) and makes people feel part of the RED family, even if they have never used a RED One.

On the flip side, they have to be willing to accept some public criticism from members, when these sort of situations arise.

People who have paid for their bomb EVF have a right to criticize the process. I'm not sure why people are making these guys feel bad for airing their views.

Distribution is become quite a worry for alot of us and these discussions bring to the fore just how people feel. Surely constructive criticism is good for RED?

I have yet to see anyone get really upset, like they probably would if an electronics store or amazon.com had these sort of problems.

It seems most people here understand that RED are unique and are willing to show plenty of patience... but feel a respectful, open discussion where they can air their grievances is the way forward.

I agree Jim, i dont think people are steaming mad at red.. just frustrated.
there is Money on the line.. and in this economy.. having big money tied up with the hope of receiving the product soon (so you can in turn start making your money back + some (hopefully)

we all love Red. the images their cameras produce.. and so on..
the frustration is in the communication. lots of hype. and motivation. but no deliveries (on a large scale)

I very much agree, and I too have all the confidence in REDs products, and I have an endless list of great thanks to the RED team for a very merry 3 years, just hope we see the EVF, the SSD R1 module and SSD cards and not to mention Epic as soon as possible! (I just can´t get enough of your stuff!)

My frustration is only because I NEED my magic RED products!

Just to be clear guys about my position. I do not pass judgement on how people decide to handle these matters. Everyone has different circumstances they are dealing with and therefore may need to choose different paths on how to handle it. I will never give anyone a hard time about voicing an opinion or a criticism, especially when it is done respectfully.

I am simply giving my personal philosophy, which in the case of RED is to handle all business matters with them directly, i.e. by phone or email. Just because that works for me doesn't mean everyone else has to take that approach.

@Samual. You are correct, I do have a viewfinder. It took 1 year, 4 months to get to me when I ordered it along with the rest of my Red package back in 2006.

Hey Steve, I find your attitude refreshing and it keeps me willing to stay patient. A formal notice from RED would be a welcome ongoing bit of information to have (for those of us waiting on major back orders). The only comment I would like to make on the flip side of this is the money issue. My money is in RED's account and I'm paying interest on that loan already but am unable to make any money to pay the bank because the products are back ordered. All the while, RED is earning interest on my several thousands of dollars. I feel they should at least return all our money, with the exception of the 10% down payments, and let us decide when they get the full payment (once the back ordered items are delivered). I for one am not willing to wait another month or two for these items. I'd like to know how long.... how long? Realistically how long? They can at least offer us some honest answers, not silence. regards, Mike Gibson, Digital Base Productions, Lubbock, Texas USA

How long have you been on backorder, Mike?

how long on backorder?

how long on backorder?

I've been on backorder since december 2010, not nearly as long as some people I've seen posting. I'd hire some more "product makers", or I wouldn't offer a product until it is ready to ship in mass quantity. My take is that they are using our wire transfers to keep the company afloat hoping we won't get upset and jerk our funds out. regards, Mike Gibson

Well, Mike, it would seem that if you want your money back, that is something to take up with your rep. and not on the forum? I know RED is here and they listen, but one-on-one conversations usually are waayy better for this kind of stuff.
I think this has been one of those bitter disappointments where things just didn't go through the way they were supposed to and I am sure RED are working diligently on this.
Peace out! :cheers2:

Mike I really don't think that's the case - Mr Jannard and hence Red doesn't need your cash that badly. He's more of your "You know, Mr. Thatcher, at the rate of a million dollars a year, I'll have to close this place in... 60 years." kind of guy.

Thanks Guys for all the support. Obviously RED has taken care of enough people that they keep coming back. I've heard great things about the company. I have, since the last post been in contact with one of the RED reps (which he prompted the communication immediately after my post). That's a credit to them. They offered exactly what you all said, to refund anything except the down payment (if I wanted to remain in the delivery line). I did suggest to them to change their listings on items that will, certainly be back ordered. For example: "RED Bomb EVF, usuallly ships in 16 months". Knowing that information would have seriously influenced my decision to purchase a RED camera because I didn't have the luxury of waiting that long to use a piece of equipment. So, hopefully the listings will reflect honest estimated delays in delivery of slow-to-deliver items. Thanks once again. The forum Rocks!
Mike

As a billionaire, he presumably makes 50 million or so a year on interest/conservative investments so even at 50 million a year losses he would never have to close :-)

It is pretty clear Jim doesn't need our money, and red is a labor of love. From comments he has made before, he has maybe challenged himself to try to build Red more like a true startup without just constantly throwing capital at it - and so far it seems it is doing pretty well with thousands of cameras already sold, and building a team of dedicated people.

I'm one of those $5k depositors, and while I am antsy to get my camera, I have absolutely no concern about ever losing that money.

When your founder is a billionaire I don't think the interest on a few million dollars (Max) is keeping the company afloat.
