Hello,

I am considering purchasing a battle teased BOMB EVF from the RED store. I have a hard time shooting with the 5" REDtouch and I understand with the EVF I loose the touch features of the menu and without the +1 adaptor I will only be able to use the EVF or REDtouch not both. So my question to everyone is is the BOMB a good choice for $2k, I typically go HDMI out to a directors monitor (so I can't go HDMI to something like a Small HD EVF)?

Thanks

Tom

I use the bomb evf and enjoy it. Do you have a side handle so you can control the camera?

and if you're looking for an absolutely mint condition EVF and a +1 check out my listing here..:-)

I find it very easy to use the side handle with the bomb evf. Only reason I still got the side handle.

My reasoning for the post to begin with was most of my work flow so far had been indoors and though I am an old school film photo camera guy and love looking through the viewfinder of camera, I was reluctantly okay with the REDtouch, I went to california for the holidays and brought the epic along and really realized how hard it is to use the REDtouch out doors in bright light. So I figured when I saw the Battletested it may be a good opportunity to get into the BOMB at a cheaper price vs new. Have any of you had any experience with the battle tested BOMBs from the red store?

I understand your concern about exteriors with the LCD touch but I don't like the Bomb because :

- the optical path is bad (the image is small)
- the resolution is low

For the way I shoot (making myself the focus, shooting mainly wide open) I need to be IN PICTURE and therefore I use the Grid loupe. The only problem you could get is to burn your LCD if the loupe points to the sun. The loupe burns white dots 2x2mm so you have to cover it when not in use. It often happen while on sticks.

I'm still waiting for a full HD EVF wich brings you the same experience as when seated in a movie theater!
Any one?

Pat

Hi Patrick

The resolution is not too low (compared to the touch)... but it is def arguable that it is too small a picture.*
The Oled Bomb is a far more acurate colour than the LCD touch..
I prefer to run the touch and OLED bomb at the same time BUT have the picture as big as possible in the Bomb by dumping the menus

I think the problem is that the original LCOS version needed a small image otherwise the colour flick artefacts would make it unuseable. Then they kept the formfactor the same when switching to OLED (for cost reasons) and we don't really get a full 720p experience (well not with my eyes)

You absolutely need the (peaking) focus edging on or the EVF will not allow operator focus.. But if you do it is very workable. At least it dosn't have the vomit inducing strobing of the sony one.

I have the TVlogic 5.5inch 1080p monitor and it is looking VERY promising..

PS assistants of ours have destroyed 2x touches with Loupes so we dropped using them... Maybe they are ok with a single operator.

I'm waiting for an EVF that :

Has 1920 x 1080 micro display, like some head mounted display glasses have now .
Uses HDMI so I don't loose the Red touch.
Is small form factor ( micro display used, not a cell phone display repackaged )

It would be nice to have a button for image blow up for critical focus. ( just magnify the 1920 by two, center crop )

For all the bitching about the bomb EVF, lets not forget that it's probably the best EVF ever made. The evf on the alexa is different in it's faults, so I don't want to say one is better than the other, they are I think equally good. You should never be looking at an evf for critical color, and it does a great job of what it is supposed to do.

also the size is so so important!! if it is too long it will hit the MB and the camera will never balence on the shoulder. The Red OLED is not too long (as the 1st one was)

In RAW format why would you care about "critical color"?

Bomb EVF is very useful for dolly work, because you're hunched over and one with the camera, although I find a 9 touch is more often useful in every other situation. I"m very tall, so usually the camera is way below my head, no matter what, and it's only riding on a dolly that an EVF is in the right place.

That said if you can head you head in the right position, then an EVF really does just pull you into the image in a very engrossing way that is unique vs a monitor, and I find helps make precise framing much easier. It's a bit like the difference between watching a movie in the theater vs on an iPad.

5" LCD is just too small except for framing-only (not big enough nor enough res for live focus). Bomb EVF is 720p, which is enough for focus although I rarely pull my own so it doesn't much matter to me personally.

I don't use the EVF/LCD for color accuracy, but I need it for FOCUS and FRAMING. The best option I got until now is to use the Grid loupe (I didn't test other manufacturers) because what's critical is the 50% of the center of my frame for focusing, where I put the action. I need to be in picture for critical framing work. I've never had this experience with the Bomb. I'm sure the TVlogic 58w will be great, but even if resolution will be a big + the main factor is the immersive experience of what you see and feel.
