I have experienced the original Red EVF that came with the red one, and the image in that viewfinder was so small to my eye. Seemed like the screen was at the end of this tunnel or something and i just couldn't get confident focus from it. I switched to LCD's, but i now have some shoots coming up with Epic and Scarlet and we will be in direct sunlight a lot. We have a hard time with the LCD's in the sun and we will be running around with shoulder rigs for this too.

How are the newer EVF's? Is the image larger in the viewfinder than the previous ones?

Thanks so much!

The bomb EVF is smaller than the old EVF's. The image is very small and the internal blacking not done very well. The monitor mapping coming out of the Epic is just plain wrong for the viewfinder and has been for a long time (you see a beautiful full spectrum color chart come up at start up and them turn to a mushy subpar image when it flips over to live view). But since monitor out which is mapped correctly and EVF out come out of the same spigot we have been waiting for over a year for that to change and I have given up hope pretty much. I had bought the OLED upgrade and the incorrect mapping made posterized looking brown blacks that made it unusable for me. Red sent me back my original EVF and kept the upgrade fee.

Overall I would stay away from it and get a 3rd party EVF

This is exactly what the Carbonite Scope is for:

While I agree with Florian's assessment of of the RED EVF's, I still have not found any EVF out there that I like better. :(

The posterization he talks about is an issue with the OLED model and I've tried talking to some at RED bout it, but it never seems to go anywhere. It's actually an issue with the scaling done for the OLED EVF and jumping to 1:1 actually makes the posterization in under-exposed areas disappear. Not sure what's up with that. There's a thread about it somewhere around here and I've posted my findings in detail with pictures. RED has been silent on the issue, but I know of some who have sent their EVFs in for repair thinking that it was a problem, only to receive them back and to be told that they (RED) can't find any problems and it's operating normally.

Anyway, I'll take the muddy scaling on the OLED BOMB any day over the sequential color and rainbow strobing of the old RED EVF and BOMB EVF (and the ALEXA EVF that works the same way) as that stuff gives me a headache.
