I'm the first one to defend RED in just about every decision they make, but I have to agree that the ever increasing "militarization" of RED accessories is a potential pain in the ass for air travelers or anyone who tries to shoot something without a permit.

Airport security

Airport security

Well first off I would dispute the claim that our cameras look like guns. However that said:

This dude describes a specific action that he intended to take ... namely blowing up an airport. So he absolutely should have been investigated.

The other fact is guns are flown every day on airliners with no hassle from the TSA or other security agencies.

How? They are checked in, not hand carried on-board.

Saying publicly that you will blow up an airport is a different matter.
1st amendment rights (or the british equivalent) are yet another matter. The article indicates that people feel the police action was heavy-handed. However, when they don't follow up on a lead we criticize them for incompetence.

Either way, it is true that by nature these agencies have no sense of humor. I am not sure how these things will shake out. What I can say is that if you don't want the bipod gunner look.... don't buy it. Thats pretty simple.

I will also say, after having been through many other countries customs.... I could very easily see a customs agent pulling me aside if they pulled the gun rails and bipod out.

Consequently, I would not bring them along till I had a better gauge on the look of the items and the potential reaction.

No dispute he should have been investigated - the point was that although it now appears to have actually been a harmless comment, it has severely inconvenienced him. So what may seem a harmless word on a piece of equipment may be enough to have some security officer at baggage inspection, maybe having a bad day, to inconvenience a Reduser by delaying him if only to explain it.

And surely we shouldn't have to check it to avoid hassle?

Also there is a product by Victor & Rolf, a Dutch fashion designer duo

titled Flower BOMB which you can buy at any airport duty free shop worldwide

and carry in a plane (of course that is covered in a special plastic bag).

EVF

EVF

I travel all the time.

And that name will give problem for sure. They freak out just when i say the camera light is a sungun. Why all the problems for a name.
We will just have to gaffa it.

Cheers

the christmas day bomb plot fellas father went to the US embassy in Nigeria and said that his son was missing and could be hanging out with Yemeni extremists and that he could be planning an attack.

90 day detention didn't stop him, stop and search didn't stop him, the patriot act didn't stop him. fellow passengers noticing a fella trying to set his underwear on fire stopped him.

It's lamentable when I can't get on a plane with a camera or lipgloss (as my one friend experienced) but explosive underwear is Ay Oh Kay

That guy in the article was an idiot and deserved to have every single thing he owns confiscated and dismantled in great detail by the police in search of evidence. It is not uncommon for nutters to tell anyone who would care to listen exactly what nutty shit they are about to do. What a foooool

As for the bomb EVF. Does it look like a bomb? does it smell like a bomb? Then it's not a bomb. And like someone said a piece of gaffer tape is all you would need to cover the name if you are worried about it.

As said last time this subject came up - surely there'll be third party solutions to fix any airport security worries. And if not, there's always DIY: some hard plastic and superglue for a permanent solution, or good gaffer tape for a temporary fix.

I agree with the concerns about product naming.

Yes, people readily transport actual firearms in the United States. (In most of the world this is not a regular occurrence. And the entire argument is moot.) These aren't firearms, and so it would in fact be unlawful to attempt to designate them as firearms and transport them as such.

So... when we have a case, not designated as a firearm, and TSA opens it to reveal something labeled "BOMB" or "Gunner" that looks very high tech and built to mil-spec....

Its a bad scene.

Oh, and putting gaff tape or the like to hide the word "BOMB" when passing through security is NOT a solution, unless the problem is a depressing lack of body cavity searches in your life.

Putting controversial names on these products is a surefire way to create hassles for users. Hassles like having your gear seized and being detained. The people at TSA and similar agencies are completely humorless.

I can actually see some of these "BOMB"s being lost to controlled detonation by "suspicious" authorities.

Also please consider that what may be a cute joke for a nice rich white guy is a whole different kettle of fish for a guy with my name and non-caucasian appearance.

I don't even talk about, "shooting" footage anymore. I take footage, I photograph a subject, I film stuff. I don't have "shoots" anymore, I have projects. ACs I am training never get "trigger time" they get "practical experience."

So unless RED is willing to make written guarantees that the names printed on this gear will not attract unwanted attention, please name them something innocuous.

How about "RED EVF2" ? How about "RED RAILS" ?

At the very least please make it easy to remove the branding, and/or continue to honor warranties of users who choose to remove the branding.

For the record I think its entirely stupid that we have state agencies which are allowed to engage in paranoid stupidity as institutional policy. The fact that legitimate users of a professional product should even have these concerns is an affront to the principles on which my nation (the USA) is founded.

In other words, RED should be able to name their next camera "RED Thermonuclear Device 125MT" and we, as users, should not have the slightest concerns regarding how the authorities would treat it.

That isn't the reality we live in. The name does matter. It will cause very serious issues. Its not funny.

I said it in my previous post, but just in case someone missed it.

Any attempt to disguise or hide something that might be seen as suspicious is only more suspicious.

These people are trained to look for people trying to hide actual bombs. Actual bombers will try to modify electronics to hide explosives and other weapons.

Do you seriously think that some amateur cover up is really going to solve the problem here?

If I see a piece of tape on an electronic item, and its covering the word "BOMB" ... well now what are you trying to hide?

So, as I said before, hiding the name is not a solution unless the problem is a depressing lack of body cavity searches in your life.

Hey guys you don't need to buy it if you are worried about it... you really don't... our feelings wont be hurt, I promise.

Some people out there don't like the "character" of our products, or our company, and that is ok.
There are much more conservative options for you out there.
