  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Bokkeh Optics, 8K FF Cine Lenses at under $2,000 each

My question as well--especially given their FF capability. A 135 @ 8K is like a 70mm for 4K, and a 180 is like a 90 for 4K. A 180, even if not T1.5, would be very sweet.

They are working on a 135mm FF35 lens, but it's to soon to say which aperture it will have. I made a mistake concerning the 18.5mm. It will be T1.6 and not T1.5.

An 18.5mm T1.6 prototype will be ready in September. Delivery of the 18.5mm should start in late 2016 / early 2017.

Great info, thanks!

I did a shootout a couple of months ago between the Celere 85mm and several other comparably priced alternatives…Schneider Xenon, Zeiss CP.2, Contax Zeiss (cinevised), Leica-R (cinevised). Here it is, with no scaling and no color correction other than a pass through Resolve to balance luma levels. The Celere did very well, with great sharpness even wide open. I also really liked the focus falloff, very pleasing.

I don't see a link anywhere Tom? Would love to check out the comparison. Thanks.

i only wish they made them with 7mm pl mounts so we can use them with adpaters, instead of changing the mount and shimming.
why do they list them out of order when they mention their set?
25, 36, 50, 85???

The 50mm just started shipping around NAB, it was the last of the 4 current lenses to be released. Initially only the 25,36 & 85 were available.

Once they get their 18 and 135 in, Ill give them a LONG look.
Celeres are well worth considering Nick. These guys are really on the right track! They are quite ambitious with some other cool goodies in the works...

I was just at the Broadcast Asia show, all four days. This is what I saw and
others from the show may chime in here, but here are some simple facts:

Bokkelux - Tested their lenses twice, found a lot of similarities to the
Schneider glass, two others at the show mentioned this as well. The lens
pictured in the photo was their 75mm on the BM Ursa camera. The lens did not
work, the focus barrel was stuck, their were no focus markings. In my opinion
they are trying to market a product that is not near being usable. I wish
companies would bring full working products to trade shows! Yes things can
happen, meaning a lens will not work anymore, but it will definitely happen on
set, especially when we need to start shooting. At this point it is way to
early to tell, the build quality was not that great.

Samyang Xeen - was so empty for nearly 4 days. One guy infront of me was having
a discussion about how dirty the lenses are when you look through them, but
those were the photo lenses. This gave me the idea to check all lenses to find
out which ones were clean through all the glass elements. I went back to
Bokkelux, of course dirty. The Xeens have breathing issues when pulling focus,
the price looks good, has a kind-of-video-ish look to it, hard to describe. CA
was noticeable.

Schneider Xenon - We asked to test the 75mm from behind the glass showcase,
thinking this is the cleanest because it is not on the show floor for people to
touch. The body was clean, looked mint, but felt a little like it could use
some grease or lubrication when I turned the focus barrel. Man was it dirty
inside. We opened the iris diaphram, full of specks of dirt and even hairs!
This is a hundred year old company, I could not believe it. I personally am
not a fan of the Schneider glass / look.

Celere HS - these guys were the show stopper. Finally clean lenses, even
cleaner than a Cooke lens I looked through! Everybody stopped, many jaws were
dropping, literally everyone who tested the lenses were amazed. This stand with
4 guys working just to answer people's questions, sometimes we had to come back
to find an opening. They had the lenses on the Red Weapon 6K with a wireless Tx
to a Sony 40" monitor, it was cool playing with these lenses. Carl Zeiss head
optical engineer stopped to test, paid them compliments, his eyebrows raised
when he discovered they were T1.5's. Cooke stopped by tested, paid compliments
as well. They even said a copy of the Cooke look is the most flattering
compliment. Most people thought they had somewhat of a Cooke look to them. A
few guys from the Red booth stopped by, tested, again impressed. At the Red
stand, they also tested a lens, a Redusers said the color match looked like
Leica's. Steven (from Celere lenses in Germany) said he was right because they
color matched the Celere lenses to the Summicron's and Summilux's. Only needing
one LUT in the monitors and in the cameras for mixing these lenses with Leica's.
He also said they have nearly completed the uncoated and Angenieux/Cooke color
match front lens elements. One of the guys is from Red Education, I think he
said his name was Ivan, took the 25mm for a test even outside, they were all
speaking positively, even invited Celere lenses to join in on the next
Rededucation. That would be so cool! That day, the last day, Red Singapore
asked for the set for testing and got them! I wish I had that kind of clout.
I felt like being at ground zero to something bigger. Just to give you an idea
of what was happening, they had private meetings with guys who flew in from
Japan, Middle East, China, Philipeans, Tailand, Vietnam, Jakarta, Malaysia,
Indonesia, Korea, Taiwan, it was endless. I was at the stand many times,
watching others test, listening in, wanting to hear what others were saying.
These guys took the show by surprise. They now have a Distributor in
Singapore, India and by the looks of it, they will soon have resellers in almost
every Asian country. I saw some DoP's coming back more than once to test,
another was a director and brought his top two DoP's for their opinion, they
both could not believe their eyes. I saw a Japanese music video shot on their
lenses at the booth, bigger name commercials were on display, they even
mentioned a feature film in New York is now being shot on their lenses. I just
need to save up and get my own set, can't wait!
- almost forgot to mention, no more breathing than a Cooke S4, clean, compact,
FF, T1.5, Sony Emount, EFmount, PL mount. They are using the same shims as an
Ultra Prime. No visable distortion! A summery of most of what I saw, tested
and heard from others testing.

Hey Kishore, regarding the Celeres lenses: Did they talk much about the elements? Are they designing and building them from scratch, or are they based on existing lenses?

Yes, they said theses lenses are designed and build from scratch. It is not possible to get that close to a Cooke look and feel with no noticeable breathing by simply rehousing, which is common to almost all photo lenses rehoused, including CP's.

I'll post a new thread about the Celere lenses as soon as I got the photos from the Broadcast Asia show with some details about the coatings, new focal lengths for the FF35 set and some info about the new lens set they are working on... anyone who loves anamorphics will be happy about those news:-)

Kishore- you wouldn't happen to be involved in making these lenses or selling them in any way would you ;)

interesting your only two posts are solely about how great these are and how much other lenses that might be affordable "suck"

I will agree with you on one point - Xeens should be about $900/lens max.

I guess you are on their Payroll. Can you provide us with some images from inside their factory where lenses are made??

Don't the Celeres use optics from other companies? Ie Sigma or Rokinon? I've heard "some" of their elements may come from these types of sources - and are folded into overall design?

Anyone have any feedback on this one way or other?

Love to know more!

As these lenses look great!!
