  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Blue Pixel in random frames on Scarlet

Ah I forgot about that! Actually we've been black shading first thing in the morning. The camera lives indoors, but outdoors gets down to about 70F at night. So this might be a problem. But Matt, wouldn't you expect this to cause a persistent stuck pixel, in the same place on all frames?

not necessarily, they could be dancing pixels as well.

Ok so I did another black shading with the camera at full operating temperature, and the blue pixels persist, along with 2 other problems. Both our bodies (Scarlet and Epic) exhibit the exact same 3 issues, but I don't know if they're related. I've been in daily contact with RED support, and they have no idea what's causing any of it. Their latest suggestion is to try removing the Wooden Camera top and bottom cheese plates.

I am also seeing a blue pixel on my latest shoot. I'm not saying that this is the issue, but the only thing that has changed is that I recently updated the firmware to the latest version. None of the footage before the firmware upgrade had any issues.

Maybe a firmware downgrade is the next step to eliminate it as a possible cause?

I'm doing some testing today to try and narrow down possible causes. I'll let you know what I find.

Thank you.

If you have the means, try recording the SDI feed while you do your testing. Then if you find a blue pixel in the R3D, you can check whether it is also present over SDI. In my case, it was.

It seems you are definitely dealing with a sensor issue. If a complete re-install of the operating firmware doesn't do the trick the cameras must be returned to RED for sensor realignment / replacement.

Good thing you're keeping your eyes opened...

So last night I could recreate the problem for every shot I tested, however I never changed the resolution from 4K to another, or changed the compression setting. Today I started in 5K mode and didn't see the issue. Went back to 4K mode and suddenly it was gone. It also adjusted the compression flipping from different resolutions. So as far as I can tell either switching the resolution, or compression settings did something to eliminate the issue. I usually live in 4K all the time so didn't think of changing the resolution. Anyway, I'm going to keep my eyes open.

Elliott [changed from "Dustin"],

Because you explained that the "dead pixel" moves around, I'm going to guess it's being caused by dirt or some other type of particle.

If that is correct, the ? becomes can it be cleaned away? That would depend on if it's in front of what I believe is a protective glass affixed to the sensor (this is not the OLPF which can be removed) or between the protective glass and the chip's micro lenses. If it's behind, I would imagine that the camera needs a new chip. If it's in front, then I would hope that a thorough cleaning is all that's needed.

This is all just speculation on my part, I am NOT a camera tech.

I don't think Dustin ever mentioned the pixel moving around. I saw it in different locations on my two bodies, but it looks to me like something digital, rather than a particle. In any case, RED said the body should come in for service. This is the sort of thing no one should attempt at home.

Sorry, I thought that Dustin was the OP. Elliott, the OP, said that the pixel moves around:

"Now that I'm on the lookout for this, I've seen it in 3 more shots today. It's always in a different place in the frame. And it has happened with multiple RedMags."

P.S. LOL, now I got! You ARE the OP.

Anyone else experiencing this still? I've already done 2 RMAs on my Scarlet-X for some crazy distortion and after getting it back after the second time, I was able to replicate my original issue using battery power. I'm trying to replicate the original issue with the power adapter and during my testing, I ran across the mysterious blue pixel mentioned above. Seems to show up intermittently and often enough. Here's what it looks like (the pixels don't appear to always be in the same spot)...

What compression ratio are you using? I noticed it as an issue at 8/1 but couldn't replicate at 6/1.
