Hello all,

Can anybody recommend a good external Blu-Ray drive for use with Macs ? (La Cie ... ?)
Is there a 'preferred' media brand for Blu-Ray ? (archival quality, eg Sony branded ? or ...)

Essentially, if anybody has some lessons learned with a Blu-Ray drive and media (and is happy to share these) ... it would be most welcomed ;-)

Cheers

You can use any drive you want. I'd get an eSATA bracket (you can use the unused SATA ports on the MacPro board), external drive casing, and keep the drive external. That way you aren't plugging down wads of extra money for an external burner that you can easily assemble yourself for a lot less. Believe me when I tell you that it takes all of about 90 seconds to put together an external burner. As for the media, go with whatever you can get. There's not a large selection out there and we're a long way from having cheapo BR media available but Sony seems to have good QC with their media so I can't really argue against buying it.

But isn't the hard part authoring the blu-ray disk in the first place? What software will you be using? DVDSP doesn't do Blu-Ray, only HD-DVD to regular DVDs. Or am I missing something?

Authoring ...

Authoring ...

Perhaps ... not on my radar at the moment, I'm considering Blu-Ray for data backup purposes only (not too fussed about authoring to it).

For my backup purposes I'll be using Toast (from version 8 onwards they support Blu-Ray).

Cheers

[PS (edit) : this site http://fastmac.com/blurayfaqs.php suggests authoring via Adobe Encore CS3 ... but I've not looked at it]
