Weeeeelllllll......

Im up in Jakarta (Indonesia) at the moment shooting a TVC. (with a RED ONE of course)
But while on a lay day I've walked past a camera shop and dropped in for a bit of a look. Piled hi in the corner was a bunch of 5d's & 7D's.... and CHEAP!

Never have I been interested in video, I am (was) a film purist and moving to RED was a big leap of faith for me. Thinking it was just another video camera I was shocked to find it wasn't and the results blew me away. So much so that I bought a few RED's and am now a RED purist.
So I proved to myself that Im not loyal to a brand and Arri and Kodak have lost me to RED. Why... Cheaper, faster, better. The 3 things that make people change.

So anyway, I thought what the hell, I'll buy a 5D and do some home video of the kids.
Got back to the hotel room, unpacked it, Looked at the operating manual for about 1 minute, turned on the video function and shot some images in the hotel room and outside, shot a few minutes of footage, converted it to PRO RES in the lappy and began to edit and grade it to see what I had.

Weeeelllllll..... Nothing short of impressed, to be honest, quite shocked in fact. A home video camera it is, A professional tool it can be as well.

Fact is though, it's painful to use, ergonomically it's a complete pain in the neck (literally), focusing sucks, not having a proper view finder is very annoying as well.
Not having 25p sucks (yes I know the smaller chipped 7d has that, but i like the Big chip look)
You cant grade or push the images as far as you can push RED footage (fact), Images are a little soft compared to RED and quite compressed when you start pushing them around, but I think that's why the images look so smooth straight out of the camera, something very charming about the images to be honest, I think the line skipping is helping this fact. ooooh and the wobble or slurr when panning is ridiculously bad as well. That instantly kills a lot of action jobs I normally shoot.

So overall (minus these obvious pit falls) I have to say what an amazing little (and Cheap) camera. If Canon fix these issues I have listed, then WOW! they will truly have a real weapon on there hands. Especially if they are going to keep selling them so cheaply!.

One thing that dawned on me is this. I want the EPIC even more now, But not the S35. Full Frame 35 mm sensor is the go! and this 5D has confirmed this for me.
But RED (Jim) get them out sooner rather than later before Canon come out with another new full frame 35 mm sensor, 24p-25p camera with a bit more more latitude and better frame rates. I think a lot of RED followers will start to slowly jump ship as 35mm film nuts like myself have gone to RED.
Loyalty only goes so deep in the land shrinking budgets, and with cameras shops around the world selling cheap FF35mm HD cameras for under $2000 this is not helping your cause.

Being such a huge supporter of RED and very vocal advocate at that, I'm not going to jump ship to quickly. I used to be a high end advertising photographer in my past life shooting only 10x8 inch transparency, I demand top shelf images and RED beats Canon hands down in the detail and range department, BUT!!!! the uneducated viewer does not care. So long as the content is good.
The images coming out of these cameras from around the world are quite amazing and only a fool would debate this.

There is no doubt that Canon is going steal market share and I don't only mean who sells most cameras.
I'm talking about there will be more and more TV and TVC projects shot on these little Canons. This is a FACT so everyone stop fooling them selves.
Being at the top end of the TV business (internationally) I can issue you I do know what Im talking about.

The images look great and they are good enough to impress the fussiest (cost conscious) producer in this day and age. I know I could swing my multi million dollar clients to shoot a 5D in just a simple sentence. So that means others can.

I'm going to keep shooting my RED cameras professionally as they are a proper cinema tool with unbelievable image quality. But rest assured once Canon bring out a Full Frame 35mm sensor Camera with multiple frame rates and a more cinema orientated design. Loyalty will be tested.

Cheaper, faster, better.... The 3 things that make people change.

So Far REDs are Faster & better.... (but compared to Canon not cheaper) (compared to Arri, Cheaper).

Jim i know your going like crazy to get these new cameras out and I applaud you for what you and your team have a achieved to date. Amazing to say the least.
I hope you do it and do it well!. I will hang in there with you and when you launch the FF35 Epic I will buy up big.
The FF35 (for me) will kill the Canon onslaught. But till then I will be slumbing from time to time. .:thumbup1:

Good luck man.

Good post, you will probably get some stick on here for your honest opinions... but the truth is that these cameras can, in certain situations, look great... regardless of test plates, skew and aliasing/moire.

The race is on.

There are lots of opinions and people that want to talk about every nuance of the DSLRs over at DVXuser. That is a much better place to carry on detail discussions about almost anything.

Jim
