It would be great to be able to have an existing image on a monitor to help frame a shot for rotoscoping or compositing. I'm sure this must be done a lot but I'm baffled. I guess I need a monitor with two inputs that can be blended. How is this usually done?

Thanks

John

I remember pushing for this to be implemented in the Epic/Scarlet years ago and there was some talk of it being on the to do list...I'd be happy with simple jpeg or png RGBA support with transparency/overlay controls handled through the usual GUI numeric keypad and/or a slider. I'd understand limiting the stills compatibility to monitoring path resolutions to allow for easier implementation into the camera firmware (removing the need for the camera to handle overlay scaling).

Anyone know what's happened to this feature? Is it still being considered or has that particular ship sailed by now?

i read somewhere that the zacuto evf was going to have a firmware upgrade that would allow about 8 stored images in its memory to be overlaid for this purpose.

I checked it out and it does indeed have a framestore holding 7 images. I must see if I can get one to test. It is only 800x480 resolution but I see it has HDMI loop through at 720p or 1080i. I didn't go for the Bomb EVF as I much prefer the optics of the old EVF (if you wear glasses you'll know what I mean) and as I rarely do hand held it suits me well.

John, could you elaborate some more on the original red EVF? I just opted for one to hold me over until I can afford a Bomb, but since I am without a camera right now, I havent yet used it... Maybe I will end up wanting to keep it for the long haul despite its size?

Should mention I wear glasses most of the time, though sometimes I opt for contacts.

The Bomb is much smaller and lighter, but a penalty is that the optics are a bit tighter. You need to get your eye right into the eyepiece to see the full image and the edges of the menu. Even when I take my glasses off, if you are not absolutely centred you can see some colour fringing at the edges too, but with specs it's all much worse. I never have any of that trouble with the Red EVF. Having said that, if I wanted ultra lightness, I would go with the bomb. There is another disadvantage with the Bomb and that is that you cannot see both top and bottom menus at the same time, you have to hot key between them. I guess that's just another price to pay for smallness.

I love my old EVF. It's super sharp, very comfortable on the eye and I use it all the time on the Red One and the Epic. It kind of dwarfs the Epic but I've got it sitting snuggly on the top of the brain and it suits me perfectly.

I've been hoping/asking for this function for a couple years. There are so many piratical uses.
