  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Bladerunner Sequel or Prequel announced.

Just so we're clear you're complaining about a movie based on a book getting adapted further? :coolgleamA:

If we followed most the 'purists' in this thread Bladerunner would never have been made. "God not another movie that's just a remake of the book! How about something original!"

The point is the movie got it right and said everything it needed to say.

Anything else is redundant.

To be fair, I think there is usually a pretty demonstrable difference between retelling the same story with different media and taking a story which has already been written/told/screened and adding on to it.

The first usually comes off far better than the second - especially when the sequel/prequel/sidestory isn't being written by the same author who wrote the first story.

First Alien and now Blade Runner.... are they going to do a prequel for every Ridley Scott movie?

Not gonna lie, I would love to see a Gladiator prequel. I mean... Maximus.. it almost writes itself.

OK, as I stated in my original post, I would consider myself to be a worshipper of all things Bladerunner. I for one, if it was done right am all for. It could not follow Deckard (given fords relationship with the film). I love the storyworld and am all for it being explored. I'm with Lucas it can far from diminsh the original. The look and feel from Bladerunner has been copied so many times anyway.

Casablanca was almost remade a few years ago with Jo Lo and Ben Affleck but it was shut down because their film together bombed so badly. That would have been sacrilege.

This is not like remaking a seminal film. This is about exploring an interesting storyworld. Like Rauri said the original film said all that needs to be said. But I would be interested in seeing a film going deeper into that world.

Get Jordon's son with an Epic while they are at it!

By that reasoning we didn't need The Empire Strikes Back. I would like to revisit the world of Blade-runner. I don't feel like the universe only has one story to tell just as the old west isn't the setting for a single movie.

I usually enjoy a new production of Hamlet even if it's been re-edited and performed hundreds of thousands of times. And personally I don't find bad productions diminish the value of the original. If people had given up on Batman we wouldn't have ever gotten Dark Knight (not that I'm a huge Dark Knight fan though).

Sequels, prequels, expand the franchise?

Blasphemy on stilts!

Mike

There have been some fair points made on both sides of this discussion. I will keep an open mind and watch what they come up with. In the hands of some talented filmmakers, it's possible they will justify the endeavor. Probably a good chance this is going to be made in 3D?

You are comparing Empire Strikes back, which was made by the same people, who still had shit to say about the world they created.

In this case, the author of the source material is dead, and the filmmakers that made it worthwhile have been excluded. You are making my point for me.

Who gets to decide what the story is? The fucking bond company. They own the rights.

The guy in control of the rights, is the same guy who for years refused to even allow the movie to be released as a fuck you to Ridley Scott.

Well that's certainly not encouraging. But I don't think we're in total disagreement here. Sequels and spinoffs may or may not bring something new to the table. As a counter example the star wars prequels were more a product of the original film maker than Empire...

I personally lean towards a more liberal embrace of extended-universe material. Open it up to the fan fics and the high art. I don't think diversity diminishes the original so it can only offer a benefit. I see no down side but a potential for a positive addition.

It WILL be 3D and WILL be scored by Justin Bieber. It WILL star Sam Worthington with Kristen Stewert as the "could she be" or "is she" a replicant with bedroom eyes and the woman he loves. I'll have the aisle seat, vomiting in rage.

Midichlorians dude.

A bad explanation for something cool CAN ruin it.

This.

When you give away too much it really can ruin other things. A prequel can really ruin the original simply because it explains things that were previously left to the imagination (see: Star Wars Ep. 1-3). This doesn't ruin the original per say, but it certainly doesn't add anything and can really ruin the feel (see: Star Wars Ep. 6: Hayden Christensen stupid ending remake....)

I can see how it is tempting to think Blade Runner 2, or whatever they'll call it, could be cool. In reality though? There really is no good reason to believe it'll be any good. Dudes who really created the material won't be the ones making the new one, which is OK, but then the question falls to who will be making the new one? And how much care is really going to go down into protecting the original and how much is just going to be blatant exploitation for brand marketability?
Call me a pessimist but I rather have my doubts about how this could go right. I'll reserve some optimism as they at the very fucking least didn't throw out the towel and made a straight out remake. That would be a sad sad day. Eh, if Christopher Nolan or <-input-talent-director-here-> directs and a talented writer or two is brought in and a good cast...nah, probably not, but hey - here's to hoping! :cheers2:

No good can come of this.

Well, Blade Runner's ending did kind of imply a sequel...

But unless its done by Scott, or a director of similar caliber, and the VFX budget is LOW...its going to suck.

What would be cool is if Jeff Cronenworth shot it.

No, it did not.

Any more than 2001 implied an impending invasion by cosmic fetuses swooping down and dive bombing the earth.

The ending implies that Dekard and Rachel are both replicants with limited time remaining. How does that say sequel to you?

It would be cool if Cronenweth shot it.

Anyway most of the original cast is in their sixties now. The new film would need to be a prequel or spinoff.

It will be 3D. And Rutger Hauer will still look like a tortured psycho.

But this time... we give him a chainsaw. And a mask. With a pentagram painted on it. And let the Black-Eyed Peas do the title track. Sort of an Albert Broccoli, silhouetted-replicant-James-Bond thing.

Include some spaceships too. With aliens. Mean aliens. With tattoo guns.

Lucas
(regretting that I participated in the thread at all... : ) )

It ends with Deckard coming back to find Gaff's calling card, implying he's coming for them...

I think the ending may depend on which version of the ending you saw...

Original theatrical release, or subsequent Directors Cut/Final Cut?

Very different endings and meanings, in my opinion.
