  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Blackshading--WHY?

Kabilen,

Apologies I am unsure what FPN stands for but as you point out if you are shooting in low light conditions you need to be more careful and if you ever need to push your sensor into under exposure you would want to make sure you have green T and E in your menu. To be honest I have yet had the need to push my sensor as most of my shoots so far with my Weapon light levels have not been an issue. Whilst I have done comparative tests I tend to be conservative with a new system and I am slowly pushing the sensor over time. I have started at 800asa with the standard OLPF and I am now comfortable with 1250asa and as I have a drama with night shoots coming up I am certain I will start to push towards 2000asa. It's not always easy to be certain where it will begin to break as the break itself is subjective and dependant on the particular scene. But one thing I am certain of is the DSMC2 cameras is that they are the cleanest cameras Red has made so far.

FPN = Fixed Pattern Noise.
Random Noise is more preferred as it is more film like and natural?

Anyway... yeah, Tom... I usually film early morning between 7 and 10:30 or later in he afternoon between 4 and 7 if its a daylight shoot. And, night shoots, because I just like to be able to control my light and not use ND filters and the such.

Last question, if anyone knows the answer to this...
Ok, suppose I do an auto sensor calibration indoors with a temperature of 25 degrees celcius and a shutter speed of 1/1000
And then I go outside to do a shoot, and its relatively cold outside lets say -5 degrees celcius.
Will I need to do another auto sensor calibration, when the dynamic cooling system is on?

Theoretically speaking, FPN is produced with a hot sensor being to pushed to make it even hotter, no?
And, in the above case, I've calibrated it in a pretty hot condition, and it should be better in colder weather? So calibration is not needed?
In any case, I just have to film with T/E being in green most of the time, yellow when time is limited (thus some of the time) and red none of the time.

Thanks for clarifying the Black Shading. Reading the older DSMC1 threads just threw me for a loop and got me paranoid.

Quick question as I cannot remember which setting the BS was defaulted to on my Scarlet-W as I've tried a black shading of my own.

There are 2 Cal Maps from Red 1) Factory 2) AutoCalibrate 40c which is dated to around April 11th, before I got my camera.

Which one should I use?

Your question prompts another one... can someone from RED say if each new Firmware update comes with a new set of default blackshades for that firmware version?
