Not taking anything away from Red's big day but for those that were really interested in the 3K for 3K thing from a few years back, this may be the answer to our prayers. This is BIG BIG news coming from the last company that I was expecting.

Info: http://philipbloom.net/2012/04/16/blackmagic/

This is probably the most exciting NAB in history for independent filmmakers. I'll miss film but announcements like this make me a little less sad. Good to see that there are other companies willing to turn the industry on its head

A quick look at their specs page...

Sensor size is smaller than 4/3... 16.64 mm x 14.04 mm, and Active area is 15.6 mm x 8.8 mm.
Shoots only up to 30p.
No PL mount option.
Built in LCD only 480 lines?
$2995

Looks kind of like a toy to me, but interesting that BMD is creating a camera that shoots RAW 12-bit, 2.5K for under $3K and Canon is not.
Not a competitor with RED.
A competitor with the Digital Bolex for sure.

Not meant to be a competitor to RED. And not sure it's a toy either. Seems like a pretty powerful little camera when you consider it has uncompressed RAW capability, can record to compressed formats as well, 3G HD-SDI output, etc. That's putting a lot of power into a sub $3K camera. If we all take off our RED blinders for a moment, that's pretty significant. Add in you get Resolve and ultrascope and that just gets ridiculously attractive. Anyone that doesn't think there's a need for smaller chips needs to watch some of the shoddy focusing that has become "artsy". I think there is a need.

RED has positioned itself where it wants to be and I think that's solid ground, a place where they can excel. BM is positioning themselves in a different realm, and I think they can do well there. This may be a win-win.

The lens mount is the biggest bummer for me. Only EF mount on a s16 sized sensor? That means very hard to get wide angle and being unable to use 16mm lenses. If it had a more versatile mount I would totally buy one.
My guess is that this is just the start. Probably have different models come out eventually, with more lens options. Smart move to go Canon mount though considering the target market they are going after. I suspect some people may already have some of those lenses laying around. :-)

The Tokina 11-16 is made for this camera. They'll sell thousands.

Well after reading through the specs, I was blown away, UNTIL I got to the sensor size specs. It is close to M4/3 put the problem is that the mount is designed for Canon and Nikon so basically, the only lenses you can use are 2.3X crop lenses right off the bat. Wide angle is my favorite look so this is a BIG problem for me. Black Magic, Why did you not put a M4/3 mount on this so that we could use the beautiful Olympus wides? Please ditch the Nikon and Canon mount. You can always use an adapter to go up to Nikon and Canon but you can't go the other way around. I love the specs, the price and the design but the sensor size make wide angle virtually impossible with available lenses. The Tokina 11-16 essentially turns into a 26-37. Please give us a M4/3 mount and you'll have my cash in hand.

Probably a Great crash camera, and for all sorts of applications where accurate cinematography is not necessary but weight and size matter.

Hans
Describe accurate cinematography. None of us have used this camera yet. Or do you mean in regards to S35 imaging? That I can understand. This is a S16 pretty much. So if you mean in terms of producing 35mm like images, sure this is not exactly a match for lenses and such.

Correction: The crop factor on this sensor is 2.4X which is a pretty substantial crop if you ask me. Really, the only high quality wide angle option is the Tokina 11-16 which gives you the equivalent field of view of a 26.4mm - 38.4mm FF35 lens. Not that wide but not bad I guess. Any thoughts? Is this sensor size going to be a problem?

Walking dead is shot on 16mm , dont hear anyone complaining about it. if the images look great and you have some dept of field options. the audience doesnt care
