  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

BlackMagic Decklink Extreme 3d: Impressions

You would think BM would have a Dreamcolor to test. And then make sure the HDMI outputs the 10-bit RGB progressive signal needed for the HDMI input -> Dreamcolor engine. I actually sold my Resolve / Decklink 3D+ since I don't have any post-production work at the moment. When I tried the HDMI card with the Dreamcolor it didn't work. But since I was only on a 2008 Mac Pro I would have had to switch to 8-bit to get realtime anyway. Eventually I will build a Resolve system when the new Mac Pros come out. But I will still want to get 10-bit color on my Dreamcolor without using an extra converter box.

I was actually stumped on this part while reading the Resolve config guide. Why do 2008 Mac Pro's have an 8 bit limitation on video monitoring?

I can't comment on connecting to a DreamColor, don't have one. But I'm running the Decklink HD Extreme 3D+ via HDMI 1.4 from the card right into a Panny 50" VT25 plasma. Works just great. This is on an '09 Mac Pro.

'08 Mac Pro has some restrictions due to memory bandwidth mostly. Personally I think the 8bit restriction is a bit over-reaching as going to 10/12bit should not saturate any PCIe or memory bus component. But whatever...

Jeff,

How do you access the BM HDMI panel... do you have a slot free? I currently have one slot free but it won't be for long. Would love to have the BM HDMI ports dangling outside the Mac Pro.

Also does anyone know if the YUV out of the BM HDMI port is a hardware locked feature or could it be easily changed with a firmware update to enable monitoring to the Dreamcolor?

at the moment no firmware has changed the fact that it's a YUV output, maybe BM is listening and will work their magic. i think jeff ported and finagled the hdmi ports through some cracks in the system and the hdmi ports are actually coming out the front of the system, i need to try to figure that one out :)

i'm using HP DREAMCOLOR, but sdi, to hdp2. still works great though. what's nice about da vinci is that it scales whatever footage down to whatever resolution you want to work in, and you can output at whatever resolution you want. so a 1080p monitor isn't really holding me back. I'd still like to upgrading to a to end flanders though.

Tom,

Thanks for your response. If I'm outputting through the BM SDI... would all I need to preview on the Dreamcolor be a HDP2? Yeah I would love a Flanders.

Hdp2 works great, gotta keep it hooked via usb too for the mini config software. Hi5 works too but i get the occasional sd job, so the conversion the hdp2 does is essential to me. They are virtually the same price ne way. Get a dvi to hdmi cable with hdp2 nd uve got gorgeous 10 bit monitoring. Im loving it. Ocassionally u might have a glitch, but its super rare

I snaked a couple longer HDMI extensions up and out the lower optical bay. PAIN IN THE ASS!!! I've ordered another Quadro 4000 card to go with the one that's currently on my shelf. I can pull the GT160 and the GTX285 and put in the two Quadros. Somewhat of an expensive solution, but should solve all my GPU woes. The Quadro being a single-slot will free up the extra slot space between #1 and #2 and then I can run the HDMI cables out there.
