  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Blackmagic 4K for $2995 now?

It is, $3,000 is a great price for this camera but my problem is I have a feeling they have a new camera for NAB, If they do I think it will hurt them more then help them this year.

He he.

I'm not sure why you are speculating negatively. A 4k prores camera with global shutter, no matter how terrible the ergonomics are, at $2995 I'll buy 4, then buy their new cam at NAB as well.

Watch out for a "full frame" sensor.

3k with licenced davinci and global shutter ...interesting

Sashbugu said it better then me ^^^^^^ Yep the 2.5k variant isn't great ergonomically so suppose the same with the 4K.

It's like an Epic brain without a side handle. You get a simple cage or handle and you are good to go. I personally love the 2.5k especially for the price. The 4k version for $3k is a tremendous value for multiple reasons. ProRes 4k (and RAW) & Global shutter is BIG in my book. I don't like losing a stop of DR but I think the above features is a trade off worth dealing with.

Anyone care about the frame rates?

Being a Scarlet owner to me this is a step back.

IMHO of course.

I would beg to differ with the idea that it is ergonomically deficient.

The BMCC is very solidly built - a compact heavy duty aluminum body more like an epic in both size and feel but it doesn't require all of the cabling that a typical Scarlet or Epic needs. It has onboard media (like the epic), onboard scratch audio, onboard battery, and onboard monitoring with no cables needed. You can certainly build it up "cine-style" since it has the same type of mounting screw holes as an epic on top and bottom to a very solid chassis. You can easily add cages, rods, nato rails, external microphones, external SDI LCDs or EVFs, batteries (pretty much any 12 to 30 volt battery can be adapted with a $3 connector, and hot swappable since the internal battery takes over if the external battery or ac adapter is disconnected). Further, it allows use of electronic Canon lenses right out of the box and can be fitted with adapters to allow use of numerous other "dumb" lenses.

But one of the biggest things is the onboard 4K output for live production:

Per Grant Petty's post:

"I think this new lower price ($2995) is important as we really need this camera to supply Ultra HD content into our ATEM 4K production switchers, but live production needs multiple cameras. If the cameras are lower cost, it really helps the live production guys afford multiple cameras so they can build a really powerful live production setup."

I love my Epic and looking forward to putting out some underwater footage in IMAX resolution 6K once we get our dragon upgrade, but the BMCC is an amazing camera that at 4K for $3K including the $995 resolve dongle is a ridiculously low price point (particularly when you factor in the cost of media) and without a lot of the hassle involved with shooting Epic or R1, so for a lot of purposes the BMCC serves very well, and is an excellent complement for us Epic owners that can't necessarily justify the cost of a 2nd camera or want to produce live 4K content - which AFAIK our REDs don't allow.

of course there are pros and cons....but 4k for 3k....pretty incredible...i have a 2.5k model and don't think the ergonomics are that bad....if it wasn't for the 1 stop loss of DR, i would get the 4k model as well...
even if they announce a new model at NAB it will take a year for them to ship it...there is a new chip (from the same manufacturer) with higher frame rates....but in reality even 2.5k at 30fps eats ssds.....so i am not sure i would not want to shoot DNG 4k at 60fps....

If Blackmagic were to announce yet another camera at NAB that would be very disappointing. The reason being that they have not completed the first three. Yes, they are coming in at rockbottom pricing which makes them attractive but one must really look at what is offered in the current state of firmware. For example, there is currently no pixel refresh mode. This is something I have been dealing with through their tech support because I have hot pixels at higher ISOs and the general consensus is that it's a very common thing and we have to live with it. This is on the Pocket. Now at $995 one might be inclined to say for the price you have to put up with some headaches. Less features, sure I can understand based on the pricing. Artifacts that were never mentioned in the brochures, I'm not sure that is a good thing for their PR at any price point. There are also issues with moire, which is simply a design issue because they don't use an OLPF. But even as a B-Cam it can burn you.

I am always saying how much I embrace all cameras on the market as there is a camera for everyone and I do believe that. However, I am hoping that Blackmagic doesn't get caught up in rushing cameras to market just so they have something new to show at every trade show. I think this will ultimately hurt them in the end. I would focus on the three they have, tweak the firmware until they have squeezed everything out of it they can, build confidence in the user base, and then take everything they've learned and move that knowledge to a new generation of cameras.

At this point, Blackmagic is not really a threat to Red because of Redcode and Red's OLPF as well as frame rate options.

none of the BM cameras go up agains red or arri....they are response to DSLR....and in that area they are right on....moire and artifacts, yes, maybe but still a lot better then what comes out of most DSLRs.....
i agree that they should not really come out with the next one, but i am afraid they are in it for the long run and these first models were just the beginning....i doubt they even have to break even with these....their business seems to be going well and if they keep pushing specs and price they WILL have a 8K camera shooting 60fps in 2 or 3 years.....and probably not for much more then the 4k model right now....
then they are a serious threat to the entire industry....
let's not forget they had the software/color tech, and pretty much everything other then the sensor BEFORE they even made a camera....they just had to put it all together....

I highly doubt that BMD would announce another camera unless it is already in boxes on pallets ready to ship. I think they will ride this 4K for a while and develop the next version in secret. The announcement and delay of the 4K hurt sales of the 2.5K and I don't think they will make that mistake again.

4K is "enough" for now and they will sell as many as they can deliver in 2014. Near term announcements will probably be about firmware updates and possibly related products.

pretty much all the guys who have a 5D MkII or 5D MkIII are excited.

Everyone I talked to whose worked with BMC tell me they hate it and would rather shoot RED. Raw files are huge, no Media Meter so you always roll out, built in battery, bad design, no swappable mounts etc.

Red is the stop gap between BMC & Arri.

It would be nice to see a trade in for your Scarlet to add a chip and go 5K for say $1000 or something? Kinda how Dragons needed to be sent back for HDRx same with Scarlet just to help with sales. Drop the Price on Scarlet and make it a 5K camera to prolong it's life since it's a marketing game.

Most kids first camera is $3000 price range thats where I came from until I could pull off a Scarlet. But some kids their parents will buy them a Red off the bat. I guess it all depends.

Worked on a shoot yesterday with 3 Alexas ProRes444...we had a Pocket Cinema and a BMC 2.5K doing ProRes aswell....

They're so cheap it's only gonna become more common allot of people jumping on board

I want a Pocket Cinema after yesterday for personal use. I mean for $1000 you get a Side Grip from Red lol on the other hand you get a WHOLE camera. Not much of a camera still needs toys to make it "Cinema" but for personal use its the perfect camcorder.

The fact is 4K is going to be common in market & the one company & their fan boys whom dreamed to hold the market is already dramatically gone down! Resolution & Dynamic range are not all which make sens .. off course right product at right time with attractive finish & price these are the things which force customers to buy the product & here is the end of Categorization between consumer & professional customer! hope RED stopped banning their reduser members who speak truth!!! or am i gonna be another Philip bloom? :beatdeadhorse5: :confused1:

I wrote about this recently on a blog. I don't look at cameras as professional or consumer anymore. It's all about what they are able to achieve for the purposes of a given project. If a GoPro is the best choice of camera for a project, then that's what I will go with and I'm sure a lot of other people feel the same way right now.
