  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Is there any solutions to get rid of the black sun?
I found out that the black sun is shining in Denmark too.:umm:

Two ways to do it. Best way is to track it in After Effects or Shake or etc. and Paint it out. Cut your project and paint on selects.

Second way is to use a selective color filter, and select around the hue and luminance values of the sensor protection area soften the selection and overexpose it:

Here is a photoshop action that will do it:

So red has said the "black sun" problem is fixed??????????? This is camera #229 of a new batch and the black sun does not look fixed very well to me. Is this a problem that can not be changed with the camera?

For me this causes me to question what other problems that we have seen with earlier cameras that we have been told have been "fixed" that indeed are still there?

Well, it does seem different to me... as I recall, the first posted images showing a black (sun, welding flare, streetlight, etc.) actually had the highlight region black, that is RGB = (0,0,0). I'd call this one a "light pink" sun. For example, in the image posted above, Photoshop says RGB = (244,225,255).

Fair enough, I agree with you there. I guess then the question becomes can red fix the "light pink" sun problem?

It has improved and the black streaking flares are gone, like Evin says, but it's still a problem. I sure hope it continues to improve, especially with build 15, which is supposed to contain all the image enhancements.

Technically, it's easy to fix in post, but it's not always that simple... There are times when there just won't be enough time or resources to fix something like this. Under intense deadlines or budget crunch, it becomes a restriction with the use of the camera while shooting, trying to protect against it happening.

IIRC, Jarred said they were still working on improving this. I remain hopeful, I just don't want to see this become the RED One's signature flaw.

*cough* RLE Alpha Channel in meta data Option *cough*

Seriously if the DSP could flag which pixels those are... it would take up less than 5KB per frame.

THEORY TIME
I think there might be no channel of data, by which the sensor can easily tell other software that it has protected a particular pixel. So RLE Alpha might be nice, but there is not easy way to get you there. In other words, it's not so easy to flag them.
END OF THEORY

Does this show up if properly exposed? That sample shot is way over. So what if the black sun comes up when you're that over. I'd like to see a properly exposed shot of the same thing. Will black sun still be?

I did a test shoot on saturday, and did not have my NDs delivered yet, I over exposed about two stops (in the higlights - not coutning the sun), and I got a black sun in the brightest parts - If I had exposed correctly using NDs I strongly suspect I would have just made it.

There is no way you can properly expose the sun. It´s too powerfull, or else your budget for light must be gigantic.:-)

Yes Steen we know. The question for me is there a point of exposure where the black sun will disappear or does it show up no matter the exposure and ND compensation you use. Like Elrik believes with proper exposure and NDs he would not have gotten the dot.

I will test different exposures to see it´s possible to work with.
If you use ND´s you only have the grad. filters and a fixed camera,
or else the limit is the overall exposure of your image. Maybe with a little underexposure. I´m waiting for the sun to come..........:-)
