  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Black Shading Tips

After you turn on the FCe, what are you looking for to let you know that it is not appropriate?

Perhaps my eyes are not as good as I thought but I have never seen any difference between morning shots and afternoon shots even on hot sunny days. Is all this thermal stuff 99% FUD?

I did phrase it rather specifically.

If the temperature is 15deg C higher than the temp is was shaded at

Case in point is black shading in the prep room at room temperature, then taking it out into a desert where ambient temp is 20°C higher - you will see noise. See attached photo from a racetrack where camera was shaded the day before in the prep bay. (NOTE: Photo is after shading again in the hot environment - hotter than operating spec, but it was worse beforehand)

Well, while I tend to believe you, it would be more conclusive if we had before and after shots.

Anyone?

What the heck is FCe?

well... just do the test... -:))

I don't own a RED, I rent them. I suspect I'll buy an EPIC stage 4, unless I can get my finances together early and then I may consider a low serial RED One or RED One MX.

The point being I don't have camera time right now to do all the tests I'd love to do.

I would need to wait until summer as the temperature range here in winter is about 5 degrees between min and max these days. But, if you can wait a few months, I shall deliver!

Interesting thread. Also for me it's still a bit unclear under which (changing) operating conditions I have to perform my Black Shading.

It would be great to know how the body regulates the sensor operating temperature. When I turn the camera on in a ‘normal’ environment it will take a while for the body to come on (working) temperature. In the meanwhile my temperature display element tells me that it’s okay, and in theory I could already perform my Black Shading when needed. Does this mean that the Red One’s regulating the sensor temperature apart from the body temperature? I am just curious how the camera keeps the black level stable, since Black Current Noise is very temperature sensitive.

If the camera needs to be on (working) temperature before you can perform a Black Shading, would it be an idea to make the temperature display element 'blue' and when the camera is ready for a Black Shading it turns into green?

What is most interesting and, frankly, a bit concerning in this case, is that despite 27 postings, no one from from RED has chimed in about this very important issue.

Stephen

that's because RED (specifically Stuart) HAS chimed in about this before. Ill try to find the thread... its at least a year old.

BLAIR: (from what I remember)

1. NO, you cannot do it too much. It simply resets all the pixels. I have an email from Stuart saying this.
1A. (Cail's advice is solid) not necessary every day, but a good practice between jobs.
2. YES< Temp is 99% FUD.
2A. There are some concerns around EXTREME temperatures, that it can be a good idea for safety to black shade. EXTREME COLD and HOT. BUT Ambient shifts from day to night, no. See # 2.

Another big issues it hangs up is improperly formatted Media. Always good to make sure the CF card is formatted BEFORE the Black Shade to ensure a speedy and complete BS Calibration.

Black Shading, while important, is not anywhere near as critical as back focus. imho
Lets not start a conspiracy thread here because RED is busy getting EPIC out the door
