  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Black Shading Noise Real-time Indication

Just as there is Edge Focus.

If you're talking about on camera edge focus then at that point all you have to do is switch over to exposure view. Purple is shadow black/noise and red is blown highlights. On the computer just go to a full res 1:1 view and press play - if there is noise then it is noisy.

Sorry Boyz,
I shoulda qualified: Typically, when traveling, I'm on a Mac Air i7 so playing back at Full Rez is not an option until I'm back home in front of a tower. Is there a way to manipulate a single full rez frame within CineX to quickly reveal noise in the blacks?

Thanks in advance!

Josh,

I really understand your concerns, because at the beginning I had the same worries. But actually noise is not that bad and according to your final output 50-80 percent disappears (ex. codec compression, h264 or x264 for online; board-cast compression, printing to film and getting grain from film on top). This whole output issue is another big discussion and there are more educated people then I am to tell you about this subject for sure.

If you expose well while shooting and do right amount of grading then you won't even have a noise issue, watch your histogram, use false color and that's it. You will be fine.

Thank you for your assurances Koray. Gotta ask, "at the beginning" . . . when was that? . . . your join date is last month

:) Yes you are rite... I am pretty new.. but for the last 3 weeks, I have spent almost 8 hours per day testing different setups. I even worked in a feature film for 4 days
and had a chance to compare the alexa outputs with epic , grade them, print them on film, etc etc.

I think it is pretty important to know your DSMC, know what it is capable of. And I can say that it is very capable. I am a fashion photographer, we deal with colors a lot.
I am used to work with raw image and we almost push these images to their limits. And All I can tell you is that EPIC is a hell of a camera..

Cheers Mate! I appreciate your responsiveness to my questions and issues. Would love for RED TEAM Engineering to bring it home with some specific, unqualified answers to the many questions I have posted in this thread.

Thanks for uploading the R3Ds Josh. I just dropped them into my Windows version of RedCine-X Pro build 7 and can confirm that at FULL resolution there's NO grey bar, but switch to 1/2, 1/4 etc and it appears at various sizes.

Takeaway? It looks like a RedCine-X bug of sorts, whereby the histogram is getting 1/2, 1/4 res info to base its functions on, which is causing the grey bar to appear erroneously compared to the FULL res raw file.

For now, the workaround would be to grade the image to your eye, then do a final histogram sanity check at FULL resolution to make sure neither end of the file is clipping (lights and darks that is).

This is the power of reduser - multiple eyes make all bugs shallow!

Cheers from Japan,

Paul :)

1. Use 1/48. I'd maybe consider another black shade if you were going to much higher shutter speeds like 1/1000th or so.
2. Go for the longest shutter time if you're switching between them. But redo it for 1/48 when you go back.
3. That is coming.

So just to clarify on point 2. The black shading is based on shutter speed not frame rate and go to for longest shutter speed if switching between frame rate/shutter speed..

Josh did RED ever come out with a detailed white pages on this subject? I want the same answers you do and to better understand my camera system.

Am I to also understand that my request for further information other than your above 6 point post will not be forthcoming? If so, why? I mean if there is 5 years of science on the topic why not share beyond the very brief general info post? A technical issue that directly drives image quality would seem to be something to share with those like me who invested heavily in Epic for the specific purpose of producing the highest quality images. I would ask respectfully whoever has this very important information please format it into a White Paper style document and release it to Epic owners so we can benefit from the wisdom and experience and add to it as experience provides more understanding of the topic. This seems a very reasonable request.

Josh?

No, I haven't seen a doc and have come to realize this is not how RED goes about things and have figured things out on my own. RED is a great company - the technical support on subjects like this is left to the User Group to provide. While not a perfect or time efficient system, it seems to create an online community of people trying to help people.
