  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Black Magic Decklink - capable of showing 4K through Premiere to monitor?

Hi guys,

I think it's about time to invest in a reference monitor. In that regard I need some kind of Black Magic, or AJA device to get a nice HDI signal to the monitor.
After reading at the Black Magic specifications I noticed that the R3D files were not mentioned in the supported codecs section.
So, before I take the plunge I just wanted to have a confirmation from one of you guys:
Does the Decklink, or similar device, correctly show your 4K timeline in Premiere/Da Vinci on your reference monitor when grading?

I was considering the FSi CM25 OLED as a monitor, since it got a crazy discount going on right now.

I haven't invested in the 4K capable BMD I/O yet but it should work in a BMD 4K UHD preset sequence. Currently, 1920x1080 BMD presets will display red 4K+ material as scaled with access to fractional resolutions. It does work and has for a while, even though it was pretty buggy at the start. For finishing in 4K, I suggest the BMD 4K I/O box and their UHD presets for your red raw material. This all applies to PPcs6/CC. For Resolve, it is resolution independent and as long as it is a UHD spec resolution, their 4K I/O should pass it out.

Keep in mind, the CM25 OLED is actually a 1920x1080 monitor and will not display UHD 4K even if you can send it out.

It does show you a 1080p timeline. But not a a 1080 feed when editing in a 4k timeline wich it says it can on bmd webbsite for a yaer....disturbing!

Not sure if I got more confused, or I got my answer ;)

Michael: Yeah the monitor is 1920 and therefor the material will obviously be scaled, but the thing I wanted to avoid was to edit in a 1080p timeline and then go to a 4K afterwards. Would save some trouble if it could stay in the 4K timeline.

So what BMD device would be preferable? I guess the DeckLink 4K Extreme is the only way to go.
 
Premiere unlike AE, or Davinci will not scale the output to a different resolution unless the display is off the video card. I have tested this with the Blackmagic 4K card. However Davinci and AE allow you to set the playback output resolution so you can scale it as needed there.
 
Not unless you use a display off the video card or create a Timeline with a resolution your display can handle to copy and paste the sequence over you need to grade off the Blackmagic card. Premiere will scale via the Video driver if you use the display off the video card.

Yeah, annoying as hell. The whole point of me even touching Premiere is to edit RED natively. If I can't use my monitor it's pretty useless. I still prefer to offline in FCP7 for this very reason.
 
If the Display has HDMI and it's connected to the HDMi of the video card, then you can monitor a 4K timeline normally in Premiere. Some of the Pro Displays have HDMi and some you have to run and adapter. FSI for example you can switch inputs at the monitor when this is required so having to unplug and plug displays is not needed.
