I just wanted to ask a few questions and hoped that some of the binary gurus might have a minute to explain. So I though it might be nice to start a little thread talking about nothing but bit-depth...
As it am sure it was mentioned on other threads the bit depth was taken down from the marketing materials on the site. However, as far as I remember, the S35 and smaller sensors were to remain 12-bit and the FF35 was the only Scarlet to get a bump... all the way up to 16-bit.
My question is a simple one... why jump from 12 to 16? Of course we must consider that one of the important things for a company to remain successful, and we all want Red to stick around for a long time, is to develop a lineup of products that don't step on each others' toes. I am sure they'll do a fine job at that and will be happy so long as they continue to destroy the competition in terms of prices to performance ratio. But I would LOVE to see S35 Scarlet became a 13-bit camera.
Is there an issue with 13? Does the jump have to be up to 14 for any weird reason that escapes me aside from the "unlucky" stigma? 14 would be spectacular of course but I'd take anything and each bit makes an exponential difference in terms of color reproduction... how many colors does 12 bit provide? 4096 possible levels for each channel, but what's the math for the total colors? Can't be 4096 x 4096 x 4096 cause that sounds like way too many options lol
