  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Birns and Sawyer's matching test: RED ONE, Canon 5D Mark II and Panasonic Lumix GH1

It's been great. Looks great. Of course, it's no RED, but it's really little and light and the resolution is great. The Nikon glass gives me the fast creamy look I'm used to. It can't compete with the low-light performance of the 5d, but I enjoy shooting with the GH1 more so than the 5d. The codec on the GH1 however NEEDS to have its data rate upped. Seriously. There's also an issue with Fixed Pattern Noise which is a drag - but when the planets are in alignment.... :)

The adapters from cameraquest are indeed high quality and ordering from there was a good experience.

I'm actually excited about collecting some other lenses and getting some other adapters. It's great to be able to walk around with such a small camera and actually get really nice imagery out of it. ...and the price you can't beat...

Of course, I can't wait for Scarlet/Epic.

Well, I don't think "bash" is a fair description, but I'd say I have been critical at least in one other thread (certainly not "every"). My respect for the mkII has grown since a friend bought one and since sold all this panny gear and is using the mkII exclusively on all his video jobs.

Although, in that context, I'm still "bashing" the 5DmkII. I was pointing out that GH1's motion looked better to me than that of the mkII.

It will sure be interesting to see how RED's new cameras compare with these new video dSLRs (i guess the GH1 technically isn't an SLR). I'm excited to get a smaller camera sometime soon.

yup it is not easy to convince the panny owner..
the codec of that monster w/ another japanese name is just twice & a half more efficient at full progressive rate :nads:
to record only 1080.. poor guys they didn't take notice of the true 720p hvx

It's only a matter of choice. If you can't afford the hottest chic on the block (RED ONE), then will you go with the one who's got the best assets out of the box, but not the prettiest face (GH-1), or the one that's got the face of an Angel but no arms or legs (MKii).

Neither is superior to the other, it's only what you consider important to have. And, for a lot of people, the GH-1's functionality and price point far exceeds the MKii's image.

its the 30p and pretty nasty skew that rule it out for me. Am I wrong to think that both the mkII and GH1 use the same shitty codec?
 
cmos skew is common to a lot of them.. red1 included.. 5d2 codec is shitty if compared to red1.. gh1 codec is shitty if compared to 5d2

no one will argue that the skew of the mkII is far worse than the RED ONE. and from the videos I've seen, the GH1 also fairs much better in that category. Is there any link or something where I can read about how the two codecs compare?

gh1 bitrate is shitty if compared to 5d2 or top avchd consumer cams

Not to downplay the efforts of those that created the anti-skew plug-in: just like the 30p thing, it's probably NOT worth the time spent in post to achieve proper results.

Just shoot RED or GH-1, at least both will have 24p.

Even with its flaws, the Mark II is the only one of the two hybrids proven again and again in practice to have value as a production tool.

On top of that the 5D has...
  • Zebra
  • Usable audio (auto gain disabled)
  • On screen audio meters
  • Manual audio gain control
  • Live configurable histogram
  • Digital slate
  • Live waveform overlay
  • Live false color overlay
  • Custom graphic overlays (crop guides, etc..)
  • Recording countdown warning / card space indicator
  • Live HDMI out
  • Hyperfocal distance, DOF, and focus distance readouts
  • Audio out monitoring
  • Audio out volume control
  • Automatic focus pulling
  • Edge detection focus aid
  • CMOS temperature readout
  • Relatively solid codec
  • A snake video game

A few of the above are only on my firmware right now, but will eventually make it to the ML release. Should note that ML can be a bit wonky, some of the above (i.e. waveform, false color, zebra) won't work on external displays. We are working on it... :banghead:

The GH1 has terrible motion artifacts, weak codec, 24p, 60/720p, subpar dynamic range, no usable audio and a flip out screen. Personally, I'm just not convinced of the value of the GH1. In my opinion its best and most redeeming feature is the price tag. However, I still hope it will surprise us! :emote_popcorn:

That's just my opinion though. Which one is better is a mater of preference, both of them present unique challenges. Right now I think most people are keeping a close eye on REDs next move.

I hope my comments concerning the cameras don't upset anybody.
