  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Birger Mount Videos - Complete Series Now Available

Yes, you can only put the connector in one way. Yes, it's really in there!

Jay

thanks jay. i've successfully powered up and have lens data except that the distance is always 112,98 for every lens and never changes. do i need the impero to change this number as you did in your video? it will probably be weeks before that arrives so i'll need a different collimation procedure.

i feel like i just failed the idiot's guide to collimation class.

thanks

You did NOT fail.. If you want the distance to work well swich to feet and then hold down the center button I think for like 2 seconds. Then that will do an extended focus calibration and your distance should be correct then.

This mount has more options that you can see at first glance.. It's tough.

Jay

wigby, you need to press and hold the center button for a few seconds to allow the mount to learn the focus positions.

i changed it to feet and held down the center button but now it only reads 2' 1" no matter what i start at or set it to. and this only on my primes. my zooms still won't do anything. if i switch them to autofocus, they make grumbling noises and the focus racks in only one direction and then stops. but these zooms are cheap so maybe i should back up and list all my lenses:

tamron 28-80mm 3.5-5.6
sigma 70-300mm 4-5.6
canon ef (l series) 24mm 1.4
canon ef (l series) 50mm 1.0

i was under the impression that collimation required a zoom similar to the tamron i have but i can't get any useful data out of it. and even if i could use a prime to collimate (can i?), how can i follow your video guide steps if the distance numbers never change?

sorry to dump this on all you jay but i guess you're the new pointman starring in the how-to-videos...

thanks for your time.

It's ok.. I will tell you that the only lenses I currently "trust" are the "L" series. So I would into getting an "L" series zoom.

Something else.... And this could be important.. When the lens Calibrates it's going to go back to it's starting position, not where you leave it off.. If you MANUALLY focus the camera, then it will be screwed up (As I said in the video)... So my question is:

Do you have an impero?
If not, what are you using to focus the lens with?

jay

If you don't have an Impero yet, you can still use Jay's collimation method by using Birger App on a computer (with bluetooth) to control focus. If set up correctly, both the App and the /i data will report accurate focus distances.

Thanks for pointing that out.

Also, I purchased a Ztudio from Zacuto that solves the ET EVF mount problem a little more elegantly IMO. It allows the EVF to be mounted anywhere on a 19mm rod so you can get the EVF into a handheld friendly position.

Yes. this is in part 2 at the end

no. i don't have the impero yet. until i get that (hopefully in next few weeks), can i use the mac app via bluetooth?

since zoom responded to manual control accurately, i assumed the focus would do the same thing. i guess not.

thanks

Current version of the software, focus distance is always a function of what the motors are doing. In the next version of the software, if the lens is set to "MF" we will output one of the "tick" marks straight from the lens, rather than interpolated distances. You will only get one of 16 or 32 unique numbers in this scenario, but I suspect it will be slightly less nerve wracking than a "stuck" readout. If the switch is set to "AF" it will have the current behavior, and you will need to be controlling the focus with an Impero, a Mac or a PC, to get the numbers to change.

thanks erik, jay and others in this forum. using my macbook, i was able to control all of my lenses and collimate my mount as per jay's instructions. the bluetooth link seems very responsive and robust. now i really can't wait for the impero piece of the puzzle.
