  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Birger Mount and P+S Technik IMS Compatibility

Eastco,

don't go,

you had a very good points,

so can we conclude here that Noctilux is a special lens and has a specific use.

The other speed still lenses can be also used with f1.2 and f1.4 at 24mm, 28mm, 35mm, 50mm, 80mm, 85mm from many different brands like a Canon, Nikon , Leica, Zeiss.

You didn't read my statement carefully. I only said angle of view. Yes, a 50mm lens is the same on Leica and RED but ONLY as far as F stops, depth of field etc are concerned. The angle of view will be cropped dramatically from a "normal" lens on Leica to a long lens on RED, making it visually a telephoto lens. The limiting factor is in the fact that Noctilux will appear close to an 85mm lens on RED therefore its application will be effectively limited to the one of any other similar long lens (even though the DOF will be the one of a 50mm photographic lens).

Hi,

There seems to be a misunderstanding here, a 50mm Nikon lens attached to a Red will have the same field of view as a 50mm Zeiss , Cooke or any other 50mm lens attached to a RED. The noctilus will not appear to be like an 85mm lens on a RED.

Stephen,

very good point back to an old rolling discussion here at the forum about FoV.

50mm is 50mm on RED or Panavision Genesis or Dalsa Origin II or Arri D20 or SI, etc...single chip digital camera.

Please, correct me if I'm wrong.

Noctilux not at it's best at 1.0?

Noctilux not at it's best at 1.0?

there's another point too... but I'm not a specialist.
As I understand it the Noctilux like any other lens will work at it's best not at 1.0 but maybe at 2.0. The fact that the maximum aperture is F 1.0 doesn't mean you have to work at 1.0
As I understood also: a 50mm Leica or Nikon will have the same effect (50mm) on the Red.

There's no doubts there, I guess. Despite, some posts from a few newbies sometimes.

Although, it doesn't invalid the usual concern about the FoV... When there's someone saying that this or that lens' focal length has this or that equivalence, it's because with the media convergence there will be more cinematographers among the still photographers, including the amateurs. There will be more producers, scriptwriters, directors trying the cinematography ala Steven Soderbergh or more recently Quentin Tarantino. Who would say such thing about a former and banal video club worker?

"A true f1,0 lens

Pictures taken with the Noctilux at f/1,0 and f/1,4
(and adjusted shutter speeds) were measured
sensitometrically and the results were identical.
This lens is truly a full stop ahead of the Summilux-M 1,4/50...

...The Noctilux-M is a superb lens with a fascinating wide open
performance and a competent performer at smaller aperures.
Its shadow penetration, absence of flare, and rendition of fine
textural details give low-level-light pictures a clarity and richness
of colours that is quite unique. The excellent flare reduction makes
it a preferred lens in conditions of brilliant lighting. You need a trained
and disciplined eye to appreciate the image qualities. You need also
some technical qualifications to exploit fully the potential of this lens."

From the same test by Erwin Puts:
At f/1,4 the contrast of the subject outlines improves, fine details sharpen up, but very fine details are still slightly soft. At f/2,0 the very fine details are now sharply rendered and the overall quality is comparable but not equal to the Summicron and much better than the Summarit at f/2.0. From then on the image quality stays on this very high level, but there is a slight contrastdrop after f/5.6.

Mind you: The lens is in my mind now! I have planned to start working with my old Nikkor lenses when my Red arrives. That's just the budget.

New Idea for European Red owners?

New Idea for European Red owners?

Hey Sanjin, maybe the idea not that new, but maybe it's nice to organize a meeting for European Red Owners (and future owners) at maybe a studio or a set to talk one another in working conditions. Of course we all have our limitations (money, knowledge, experience). The fastest way is to show one another.

Johan,

a graet idea.

At IBC 2008 in Amsterdam again.
