Owners of the Birger Canon Ef mount for the Red One should be interested in this. I've had Cinemods make me
a custom adaption of the Red One Birger mount onto one of their Epic oct 19 (red approved) lens panels.
There is no electrical connection between the mount and the Epic so there is no focus distance or aperture
data on the Epic monitor but other than that it works very well. Smooth remote focus pulling using Canon lenses
on the Epic practical despite the Birger/Impero quirks.. The Flawless and precise machining by Chris at Cinemods is pretty amazing.

Contact http://cinemods.com/ for more info. I have no financial stake in this just thought others might like to go this way till the Redmote Pro comes out.

I really hope 3rd party mods like this don't delay any sort of development with the REDMote Pro and what hopefully will all be built into the system. This coming from a guy with a Birger and Impero sitting on a shelf and a Canon mount and a complete set of Canon Lenses in use daily with a need for a remote focus system. I just know that occasionally RED lets 3rd parties fill in gaps and sometimes it turns out not to our best interest as consumers because of the design choices that have to be made as a way of coping with existing physical limitations. No offense intended to this product. It sounds fantastic but I am in a sorta dumb limbo because 2 months ago (and for the previous few years) I had great wireless control and now I have none until the REDMote Pro makes its presence known.

Justin I seriously doubt this will affect what Red does in any way, I was in the same position as you with the Canon lenses sitting around, It's a temporary but effective interim solution.

There are definite examples of this in the past where RED basically deferred to a 3rd party for one reason or another. Interim solutions can be good though :)

Cost, you'll have to contact cinemods.com, Steve's email is at the bottom of the opening page. I'm powering it from a custom power cable the splits out from the dc power in socket on the back of the Epic, the power runs into the box above the lens mount via the same type of lemo plug as the original birger red one mount.

Very interesting! Thank you Marcus! Can the antenna still work? Where did you source the cable? As a return favor, I should warn you that the Birger needs clean power - without power regulation I'm not sure that you won't at some future point grill your Birger Mount using straight V-mount power. If you call Birger, (after NAB) you can find out more about this - but maybe your power is already filtered. The Aux-outs on Red One were both filtered/regulated.

Rob, what do you mean by clean power, regulated voltage or over current protection ? Yes the antenna still works, its attached on the right top side of the box. I made the cable myself.

I don't know, but I do know that Erik (from Birger) said that the Birger mount was designed to use the power-out from the Red, and that power out was "filtered". I am not sure filtered in what way - I assume over-current protected. He said that using D-tap directly was apparently risky. Thats' all I know. Maybe it's OK. You could phone him and ask him after NAB, or I could.

If it is OK, would you consider selling a cable like the one you made?

Rob thanks for the tip about the Birger power in, I've had no problems so far, maybe its some kind of protection against shorts. Regarding the cable mine is a bit of a custom job, safe but not pretty. Probably better to get someone who makes up cables professionally to do it, you could ask Cinemods if they would be able to do it. I'd be happy to provide all the pin out / connection info that I used.
Also if you are using Redvolts you'll have to provide some alternative battery to power the Birger as I'm not aware of any way to get power out of the Epic body.

Not a fan of Redvolts, so no issue there. Thank you kindly for the pin-out offer. You know there is probably an easy way to just put a little "filter" between the battery and the Birger Mount, to keep things safe. If the mount went down half way through a prod day, that would be disastrous. Better to be safe!

Two related questions:

1. Will this also fit on the Scarlet?

2. When will the REDMote Pro be released?

Thanks.

Stephen

before trying this epic-birger-3rd party-solution out, i would like to hear from rd that it would the red armor warranty...

I don't see what the problem would be - you are essentially using an approved mount with an extra bit on it that does not touch the camera.

ok, if so everything is fine, but remeber how it went the last time around...

Last time required futzing around with i-data cable, and sending info back the camera. i-data cable could become damaged. Here there is no direct contact between the Birger product and the Epic/Scarlet. It would almost be the same if the Birger were on a table next to the camera.
