So I'm shooting a music video short film, and We are shooting on my RED, Ive got a full set of zeiss primes for my canon mount but really want to go pl on this video since we have a budget. Its all set in 50's and will be black and white. Currently I have selected Cooke S4 primes 14mm, 32mm, and 100mm based on locations and camera tests. However im really stretching my budget to get the three lenses together.

I have access to RPP 35mm and 50-150 for much cheaper. Almost free with trade to my buddy. Now my question is this......

Being black and white as final output, Should i worry about mixing lenses? cooke 14 and RPP35 and 50-150? Or would it be better to get all one brand?

will color matter on each lens or really is it all about mixing sharpness and resolve power of each lens?

Thanks in advance. Hoping for quick answers.

You won't probably won't notice the difference, esp in B/W - unless the bokeh's are really different (say one has 6 blade iris (hexagons) and the other 14 blades (circles)...). And the flares may be different....I think RPP's are known for a distinct flare.

You could also get Super Speeds...they would match your Contax glass...and could swich between Canon and PL mount on set if you really needed to. But I understand the desire to shoot on PL glass.

Have fun and good luck.

thanks nick :) appreciate it. Wouldnt mind flaring in this since itll have a mild super 8 movie feel.

If you want Super 8, then those aren't the same flares. You're thinking ANAMORPHIC "blue" flares.

You can cheat with Optifex Blue Streak Filters, and just throw them in front of your Contax Glass.

Rent a 4x5.6 Matte Box if you don't already have one.

Or rent some anamorphic glass, like Hawks, etc.

I'm sure some true DP's can step in here and tell you more...I'm more of a producer/director to be honest.

Good luck.

Not so much looking for the anamorphic flare as much as some regular flare. I will have a 4x5.65 mattebox for nd and pola. Im mainly concerned about cutting between the lenses and whether or not itll look strange. Im sure nobody will notice but its one of those things im picky about.
