  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Big news...

If I was a betting man (and I'm not, which is enough to get me run out of Vegas on a rail!), I would bet the next we'll hear about Scarlet will be Jim saying 'Scarlet 8x, RED Store, 9am tomorrow morning, and I dare you to try to run us out of stock'; I got the impression they were DEAD serious about no more tease or pre-announcements or delays or backorders. Nothing, until it's ready to ship in serious volumes.

They *really* want to roll with this, yesterday, but they will *not*, until they're ready!

Mike

This is great news if true, and the excitement of knowing that we will only hear about it when it is ready is proof enough for me that Jim has made a good call with dialling down the usual updates.

While I think the decision to wait to release information until items are ready to ship is a smart one I do have two issues with it. One; reduser takes too much to find information on and the news on site isn't updated frequently enough. Can you please use the email system more? I spend most of my time working and can't spend hours reading posts to find little bits of information. Second is gap information. As far as items that have been announced without a shipping date (ie Epic-X, Epic-S) can you please at least keep us informed of hard information. For example when production begins on Epic-Xs, what the specs on the Epic-S is once its locked in, and please clarify what is involved in all the stages now. We're just trying to plan our purchases and projects, knowing that things can change, with some chance of accuracy. I know for my business we've already sold 3 of Epic-X reservations now and bought Alexas which wasn't what I want to do. But not having moving targets has been the problem. I do understand that the supply problems in Japan are an issue, although I don't understand how you can increase the production of Ms if you don't have the parts. Red has put out a great product and I've been there since the earliest times. I'm sure you'll continue do to so, I'm just asking for a bit of help with all of our lives.

I hope too, it will be an insanely happy day. I can see 22,000 un-boxing videos on Youtube.

Ok Mike, is you RED officially called Eyjafjallajökull? If so can my future scarlets be Krakatau and Lengai?

We might have thought that after Jim’s, the God of RED, pronouncement of no future pre-announcements the RED Congregation would have little to post, however after 165 posts of speculation about the prospect of no future speculation we can see their worship knows no bounds.

Still, RED have really shaken up the industry with RED one and now Epic for professional use so when Scarlet is actually in the shop window with full spec and a tempting price tag many individual film makers both amateur and professional may find it very difficult not to become a believer / owner too.

But Red has had consistent delays on pretty much everything, and I say this without anger, because they are creating the future, and that must be damn hard!

Remove "pretty much" and I agree entirely with your post. That's why the news of Dragon doesn't particularly interest me. Given Red's history, this sensor, even with the best of intentions, will likely be years away. Red don't miss their shipping dates by mere months. We are literally talking years here!

and my money is on you waiting even longer than everyone else with negative posts like this. Do you really think taking a shit in their forum is going to help the cause dude?

its just plain rude and as Jim would say... "feel free to start your own digital cinema company delivering this kind of innovation and lets see how you do"

Hi Tim! I'm not trying to take a dig at Red. I love their philosophy and their strive to push technology forward. The cost is shattered expectations. Did I exaggerate in my previous post?

my money isn't. you can have a pretty grumpy attitude and still get an epic-M. I didn't read much more into this post than a thousand I've read, and certainly didn't read it in terms of warranting an extended wait. epic-x is clearly far and away the best option out there, and red dragon is only going to go farther - but let's not kid ourselves, so is the wait time - hence no clear cut announcement.

I love the constant progress updates personally and I am really bummed out to hear they might stop. If anything the more information the better, and I love how the customers have a say in what features are needed. I will be quite sad to have Red stop with the announcements, and I hope they reconsider the decision. One of the things that attracted me to this company was the level of communcation and openness with the customer, and I for one will wait patiently as long as it takes for me to own a Red and not sit here and whine about delays. All the best things in life are worth waiting for. Please Jim and Red keep the announcements coming, they are so helpful and it gives something for us to read about while we patiently await the day we too can own a nice pro camera!

Communicating and giving out critical competitive info prematurely are two different things.

Jim

I love the openness of Red, but when it comes to this Sun Tzu art of war business shit, I trust Jim's instincts. Jim has to use whatever strategy works best. It looks like some of the other guys have taken the gloves off and declared war.

Will there be some kind of stage clarification announcement soon?

that's a rhetorical question, correct? - You previous post boldy corrected someone to say that Red is ALWAYS late... and thats PURE FUD>

FACT>: I just ordered a Clutch when it was first announced and it was available a couple days later. Same went for RED CF Reader, Base Station, Red Rocket, Red Rocket BoB and a number of other products.

Does Jim humbly admitting they "didn't know what they were doing" somehow get lost on you?

Nobody is more disappointed than Jim and he has the medical history to prove it. Your posts tend to presume that RED somehow delights in missing guesstimates, and I found it offensive.

You catch more bees with honey than vinegar mate. Its takes maybe 4 more seconds to breathe and express your frustration in a constructive manner than making ABSOLUTE statements
that I just proved to be false.

Epic is late but better than the original announcement. The japaese are wading thru miles and miles of mud 4 feet deep to dig out bodies... Tokyo is operating on 40% power (60% of Japans power
came from those Nuke plants) its a bloody mess over there. I think you know darn well you were exaggerating your criticism... and in their own living room.
Not sure about down under, but in most civilized countries, that's considered downright rude.

If you don't know what you're doing, you're probably trying to do something that no-one has done before.

If it sometimes appears you don't know where you're going, you're probably going somewhere no-one has gone before.

If it looks as though you don't know how you're going to get there, you're probably learning to fly.

Wow! Seems a little excessive. My question was not all rhetorical and I'm happy to be proven wrong. I was simply stating that I didn't (please interpret this as me/myself as an individual - I wouldn't be arrogant enough to slander a whole country based on my post as you seem to) see Dragon as a big enough surprise for the hype leading up to NAB. Yes, it may have only been hype generated by this forum but it was hype none-the-less. Now, I am enthused with the projector and look forward to Red smashing it out of the park but there is no projected timeframe for Dragon. I have no doubt it WILL be great, it WILL be a game-changer (again) but I doubt (once again read this as my own personal opinion) it will be out in 2012. Only Red knows this for sure. For me, I was wishing for more info for the products to be released this year. What happened in Japan is tragedy but frankly I am insulted that you imply I don't care about that situation and have somehow forced Red to disregard that simply for the sake of getting a camera out.

Even though this is the internet, Tim, please don't forget your manners in the future.

This seems totally reasonable! Fair enough, so we now shouldn't expect information prior to release of a new product. I think everyone on this forum should be able to understand and respect this position. I was quite shocked that there was in the end no announcement about Scarlet at NAB because I didn't understand that this was the new policy.

But then I go to another part of the forum and see this:
http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?57666-Scarlet-s-World-Premiere...-(BTS-Video-from-SF)

It just doesn't seem to be the right way to go about releasing information..
