A little birdy just whispered something pretty remarkable into my ear. I cannot verify this AT ALL but rumor has it that Canon may be prepping to unveil a RAW or sRAW recording module for the 5D2, 7D, etc, which would record possibly via the CF card slot. Apparently they are being tested and used now.

Will post more details later if I get any. Don't know about framerates or RAW vs sRAW. And again, this is totally unconfirmed, from a single "high-placed" source.

Things are going to get interesting...

They already know how to do raw really well so this isn't a huge stretch of the imagination. How someone would POST video of Canon raw eludes me but it is interesting nonetheless. It is a major development though. It would indicate how Canon is thinking.

And I need a new Canon DSLR...

Just hearing now that it might be sRAW 1080p. Full RAW would obviously be better.

Not sure if it records via Hdmi or CF.

Will get more info and post some thoughts about sRAW when I get home from the beach. :)

I do post Nikon RAW every day through After effect. I'm doing an animation film using still picture from the Nikon 2Dx.

They would probably give us a codec.

As long as it gets top NLE support or has a conversion utility like RED provides it would work out. I'll be fascinated to try out this camera. Scarlet and EPIC are going to have all kinds of conveniences these cameras don't which make typical set shooting much easier, but still - this thing should kill the adapter market.

Well, when all VDSLRs start using RAW it won't be a surprised to me. I have been saying it here and dvxuser for a while now. RAW will be in all this cameras. It is already in the stills and you can securely bet your house that it will be in the video too.

I'm sceptical that they are aiming tu build a "real market" with this support. They wont be able to build a company, like RED did, around what I would call a "fix" to their video feature of the DSLR, and so threaten in any way Scarlett or Epic. But perhaps this "fix" will be a testing ground to developp RAW support on their video prosumer market like XLH1...etc.

?

I'm sorry but I don't see how this would technically be feasible.

Well sRAW stills use some kind of pixel binning but sometimes leave artifacts, and can "burn in" hot pixels.

Canon's got some pretty deep pockets and complete and total retail distribution. They know how to sell and support millions of units of whatever they feel like selling. It's just a matter of what they choose to do with their time and money. Apple is aggressive in the iPod market but leaves Final Cut to wither by comparison. Canon may have other fish to fry... or they may merge their video division into their DSLR division. That's what I would do.

Huh?

Canon are a much, much bigger company than Red.

If they wanted to, they could do this in a heartbeat.

The big question is if they want to bother to do this.
If they feel the size of the market warrants channelling a bit of development money into this.

What is the difference between RAW and sRAW ? If it's true, would either of these options be 10-bit/4:2:2 or 4:4:4 ?

And kill the prosumer market of XLH1 like cameras?

They will never go into the same market as RED is aiming, "high end digital cinema" . But RED is probalby aiming to eat up a tiny bit of their prosumer maket with Scarlett.

My 2 cents

I just screencapped this from BH. Apparently, Canon quietly killed the XLH1 last week or something. Yet another piece in this puzzle?

Michael, I will post some thoughts on sRAW in a bit. I think it would actually be RAW 14-bit. I'm not sure. But I came across some problems with sRAW 1 (half resolution) when I first got the 5D2 and shot some sRAW 1 timelapse sequences. I think I had some moire-like aliasing, and I definitely had some "burned in" hot pixels that were very difficult to remove in post when I shot sRAW at high ISOs. There was some discussion here with Jarred and Graeme.
