  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Big FCP overhaul rumor... fingers crossed

I want to know if it will directly read RED's R3D files without the crazy wrappers and if it will fix the gamma issues everyone complains about.

This thread kind of emphasises why it's impossible for Apple to please everyone; if they we're going to try and do that it would be a behemoth application with no focus whatsoever.

What Apple really needs to do is to make it 64bit, rock solid, give it a pro GUI, sort out daft rendering and QT gamma issues and enable acceleration for playback and effects. If they do that they'll be right back in the game.

Avid and Adobe have both upped their game massively, FCP badly needs this to be a killer release. Let's hope it is.

I just hope they don't try and make it Smoke, because it'll compromise what FCP is good at and it wont compete with Smoke anyway.

This sounds right - looking at the release history, early this year was about the time I was expecting a new FCS release.

I guess a lot of people lost faith a bit because the last release wasn't that big compared to previous releases, so they expected an earlier update...

Totally true - I think we have nothing to worry about.

Interestingly enough, they randomly released 64 bit support in a point release update. I guess there's a lot more legacy code to port in Final Cut for them to have done that already though.

Where do you get that idea...? I think the biggest reason that they don't support Blu-Ray is because optical media is getting to be a bit of a dead end.

I'm hoping that in a few years, most movies will be available as a 4K RED RAY download...

It's getting to be a dead end and there's still no sign of it? So maybe Apple should of released BR support back in 06, hell why not 07, but wait what's the hurry we're in 2011 and still nothing.

I'd love for nothing more to be able to film, playback, and burn 4k material but that's not gonna happen for a while.

Not looking for you to break any NDAs but is that more than just a hunch?

Total hunch. I don't care if they simplify the interface. Why does it need to be complex? I don't think that makes it more "pro". Everyone is improving software design interface, Adobe for one. GUI's are becoming more streamlined and I think this is a good thing.

AE is painful when it comes to keyframing. Why? to keep users away? intimidate them into not wanting to use the stuff?

It's a business and they want the widest market. That does not mean that in the hands of a "professional" it is not a great tool.

The Logic example is a great one. An excellent ONE WINDOW browser style interface.

I think that they will eliminate "send to" commands and integrate the whole suit. Think SMOKE with Apple design sense and features that will make things easier. Look for bluray support too.

David:

Total hunch or not, I think you are on the right track. I think all the FUD about apple being an ipod/iphone consumer company now is nonsense. Apple COMPUTER sales are up 20% vs. last year and there is simply no reason for apple not to capitalize on it and keep producing for the high end as well. They have plenty of cash and the cache of having high end projects done on Mac is worth plenty even if the profits are not as high as in other areas. (but FCS will be a nice profit center too even if dwarfed by other areas.)

Just to add one more thing.

The last major technology in FCS was RealTime Extreme. Users wanted more RT. Now I think users want to stay in the same software interface instead of clunky send to, send back, which lacks elegance.

I think apple like elegant design and I think they see themselves as the machine for working pros. I think this has taken long because integrating the technology has taken long.

I don't think they tanked Shake, I think they will integrate it with some nodal based compositing component in the suite. Shake is not dead, it was just on the shelf.

Motion is powerful.

I suspect they will be making a HARDWARE jump as well and that has been part of the delay. They like to release a major app like FCP (with a million seats) and use it as a way to drive some high end hardware sales.

It's speculation, but its calculated speculation.

I'm really hoping FCP makes a resurgence. I love Apple and stay loyal wherever possible, but it's clear that others have been focusing more time and attention in advancing their platforms. Hopefully this brings Apple back to competing at the front of the race.

Rumor rumor...

remember when they killed Shake and promised "phenomena" to replace it... that was like 4 years ago

Apple make toys
Linux is the pro future (actually its the present)

thing is RED is run by 1 person who has a passion for images and RED is a private company out to break the mould.

Apple is a large corporation, a public company and has many chiefs

no bluray in Final Cut

no bluray in Final Cut

open sequence
file > share > bluray

works like a charm :-)

I've been seeing a lot of folks jump ship in the past 6 months. I on the other hand don't feel as I'm ready but this is the last straw. As much as I love to film, editing is up there as well.

Apple's Motion is a joke atleast when it was first released and that's comparing to After Effects. Everything in FCS is out dated. No Blu-Ray because Apple is trying to defeat piracy? Blow me! PC will always be leading the industry for piracy. I guess it's still early so I'll keep FCS in my prayers.

I can understand what you are saying, but I would say that Apple is what it is at this moment because of the passion of one man, Steve Jobs.

Apple. NeXt. Pixar.

You don't have to be a sole proprietor to have soul.

RED = Jim Jannard plus a HUGELY talented following

APPLE = Steve Jobs plus a HUGELY talented following

Public or not, no one pushes either of these guys where they don't want to go.

Maybe a direct to iTunes/cloud distribution path out of FCP. Killing tape, Blu-Ray and optical disk once and for all. Virtual film festival 24/7/365 that monetizes all your content. Like YouTube, only better.

I have heard this before, not to be antagonistic, but how is it clear that they are focusing more time and attention? - only Apple knows how much.

Adobe has released some upgrades that have gotten it to be taken seriously but that doesn't mean they have actually outpaced where Apple is or even was at the time. They all have different release schedules. Final Cut in its current release is fine for the vast majority of users and still sells, it has just been frustrating for the few thousand of us that are on the bleeding edge with 4K footage.

The reason pro interfaces are more complex is itself simple: control. The more aspects of animation that you need control over, the more options you must have and the more GUI real estate you need. The clever way to keep it uncluttered is contextualisation and that's just one aspect where Autodesk is miles ahead of the rest.

I'm not knocking Motion but you simply can't compare the creative flexibility that it offers with After Effects. Equally you can't compare the creative flexibility of After Effects with Flame.

Also, once you send a lot of long days in the suite you begin to realise just how clever the Autodesk interface is. It's much, much less taxing than anything else out there, the lack of chrome, endless drop-downs and various tiny icons suddenly all makes a lot of sense. Pro is a lot more than skin deep, but it certainly starts on the surface.

My humble guess is that the next version of FCP will be where all the technology of Shake went which is where the "ambitious" quotes are coming from. If it's just standard editing, that isn't too ambitious.

I think the delay has been partly due to the fact that what they wanted to do required new hardware and new software and 64 bit etc and that was not available. Hunch now is that they are inviting these people in to hunt for missing features or anything they "missed" in their development.

Hunch hunch hunch.

Would spring be NAB?

And just an aside... I feel like while Adobe has been making upgrades... they've mostly been vapor and After Effects still carries some problems when managing large files which is at times crippling. By vapor I mean like.... auto-roto. I've not seen it working as demo'd in real world scenarios. So... is it so bad Apple is delaying an upgrade and making it worthy? Hell, they're going to charge you a lot for it, why bother paying multiple times for minor changes?
