  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Big Change...

The main advantage that I'm seeing is being able to use it with my existing Canon lenses without engaging all the drama. That alone might be worth a few grand while I wait for a drama free third-party RED ONE solution....

It's seems like with the Canon you get a great still camera with the bonus of shooting some form of video. It will be interesting to see how Canon and Nikon evolve as they try to play catch up with Red. Red, I hope you can release a camera that attacks that price point and give us something pro.

Maybe its not a new camera or hardware related at all. Maybe a rollout from Adobe, or maybe Jim has struck an amazing deal with AVID that could substantially benefit all RED/SCARLET/EPIC users…

YES! now you can choose to shoot MXF proxies! :)

Oh please God, please let it NOT be that they're NOT going to finish the plug in for the Windows apps!!! PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry Jim, my worst nightmare is that somehow, someway, the plug in for Premiere and AE won't come to pass. I realize that you have said repeatedly (what, for the 8th time) that it is being worked on. Speaking for myself only, I think the Red One was the answer to my prayers and I am thrilled to have it, but honestly, I REALLY NEED the plug in to have a practical workflow. Sorry if I have offended, but I am holding my breath waiting for it.

Adobe has announced full support for .r3d files... not just us. You have a lot of people working to make this happen. Try to relax. Just a matter of time.

"RED and Adobe share the goal of enabling the most advanced tapeless post-production workflows in the industry. With native support for RED R3D files in Adobe Premiere Pro CS4, Adobe Encore CS4, and Adobe After Effects CS4, Adobe is furthering the integration of tapeless camera formats into its line of professional video products, and making post-production workflows faster, more flexible, and more efficient. RED's Digital Cinema camera line, the new RED plug-in, and Adobe video tools provide an exceptional solution for video professionals who want to harness the full potential of raw digital cinematography while tapping the efficiency of tapeless workflows."

How can we help to rush/expedite/accelerate this up?

As much as I would like to see memistor, I highly doubt we'll see it. HP is a massive company with $$$ in R/D. RED, while a great company, doesn't have the money to put the require research into memistor to make it feasible. I suspect it'll take even HP >5 years to bring memstor to the market.

Well, even HP states that they are looking for a 2010 roll out if not sooner..and HP isn't the only company working on this.

This would be a great solution for all of RED systems...even the highend Epic.

Cheers,

Ray Adams

Maybe the change is that the form factor of the Scarlets and Epics will be cut in half so they look more like cubes rather than an oblong front. Perhaps people would be too flipped out if the form factor seemed rather small, all in one go to begin with; this is way they break us in gently to much smaller form factors than we are used to?

After reading the statement from Jim about Canons "parlor trick" (skipping pixels to get 1080p recording from their "full" sensor area)... I've started thinking...

Actually... Even though it isn't exactly in the RED-way. Why not use that same parlor-trick and better Canons result. The Canon sollution does have it's merits, though it's hampered by lack of controll of exposure (as I have been told at least. I don't know if it can be worked around like with the semi-auto HV20), crippling compression, limited FPS control and no raw.

There has been much talk about a fictional s35 3K scarlet because of the percieved features it would bring with it. Even as Brainburst continually puts forward the 4/3 way of doing things. A s35 scarlet in 3k has the main points of lower storage-needs (than the promised 5K at least) and ability to use s35 optics and therefore DOF (which I tend to feel is overrated IMO).

So, what I'm getting at is that the red cameras has always been able to do "windowing" to get higher FPS. And in all fairness, In my mind, "windowing" is also a parlor-trick. You trade off resolution and FOV for FPS. But it works. So... What's stopping The Team from putting pixel-skipping into the camera as a firmware upgrade feature? That would give, let's say, the 6K scarlet that has a maximum of 30 FPS, a mode of recording "pixelskipped" 3K in somewhere of at least 60 FPS (and assuming that 3K being quarter of 6K it maybe would be able to boost FPS up to, say, 30*4=120fps, not counting the effect of bayer-grids of course). utilizing the full FOV of the Full Frame sensor. In RAW, with full exposure control.

True, the dynamic range and low light capability isn't boosted at all with this method. But at least everyone that craves the "nothing in focus"-look would be happy. And we all get full-frame slow-mo. Without the over-stated rolling shutter issue of the Canon;) I don't know if the voodoomagic RedCode would be thrown into a fit though, having to skip pixels to reduce resolution instead of focusing of a smaller area of the sensor...

And maybe it would lower, what I imagine must be a concentration of energy on a small space on the sensor and therefore concentration of heat. Instead spreading out the energy and lower the overall temperature of the sensor.

This would only entail a firmware update I think. Not limited to the 6K camera. A 2/3 3K scarlet could in my mind pixel-skip to 1.5K RAW and 240 fps. 360 burst. And the Sillily large 617 Epic could get 14K feeds of 50fps. All utilizing the full sensor area.

That is... if I've understood the tech-side of this feature in good enough way. I'm sure that it has all been discussed by the RED build team at great lengths and for some reason or another (I imagine it could totally screw up the lovely redcode magic for instance) the windowing was chosen. I just hope that the "parlor trick" isn't scrapped alltogether though if it actually would work as I have outlined above. Just because it was the way that Canon did it, and we'll relegate it to the pile of don'ts right next to "pixelshifting"...

just my 13 ören on the matter:)
Agreed. Nice post.

I know several of the posts on this thread have been rather down about the notion of continual changes, and have leveled the charge of RED conducting business in an “un-professional” manner. However (as a director of a R&D firm) I would say that constant reassessment of what you are trying to develop is very important especially as the new technologies concerning electronic design software, as well as CAD and CAM enable one to be very agile and allow one to constantly ask the question almost up to the last minute, “How can we make this better?”, are there new technologies, methods and opportunities that we can suddenly take advantage of, so that we can deliver even better products to the customer. RED is unique in its level of customer focus, most design and technology firms just try to bring out products that only have marginal product differentiation from their competition. RED on the other hand are already way out ahead, and yet still strive to deliver even more ground breaking technologies to be placed directly into their customer‘s hands. It’s a great privilege to see a company thinking out load and getting their customers involved.

When was the last time anyone had a nice chat online with the CEO of CANON about product design?

Chill

Chill

Some people really need to chill.

Red is one of the most remarkable companies I've seen with great products available and also announced ones.

People that ask Red to stop constantly changing the specs shall get happy with Canon/Sony where advancements and features are only served in minimal doses so you're forced to buy a new kit every 2-3 years.

There seems to be a completely different approach: Canon thinks about "how long was our old product out there" and "what minimum new features do we need to provide to make customers upgrade" while Red seems to try to stuff as much as possible into the new product and get you the best bang for the buck. Certainly they are finding new and better ways, improve from A to Z and we all will be benefitting from it.

I just love it.

If you're tired of new specs and the guessing/wishlist thing then I suggest you go out and buy a RED ONE today. Then start to shoot and stop hanging out in forums... problem solved.

It seems silly to complain about spec-changes if you can have a released spec-frozen product today.

Let's be grateful for the enthusiasm and hard effort Jim and his people are putting into Red.
