Hi Folks,

We received a request via email to reserve a camera package from "bttysandra@yahoo.com". After sending pricing, "Betty" sent us a check. Although we specified money order or certified check only, the check was not certified, but had the word "Certified" typed on it. It was also for more than the rental amount we quoted. We deposited it.

Next, she emailed saying that she accidentally overpaid and needs us to immediately wire the excess funds back, but would not give account numbers, requiring only Western Union or Money Gram.

Business accounts frequently "post" the funds on a check that may not have actually cleared. So, you may think the check cleared and days or weeks later it will bounce.

I found her address posted on a site: scamvictimsunited.com. I encourage you all to google the email address of anyone you are suspicious of.

Obviously you have to be careful who you are dealing with remotely. Regular checks should probably be sent back, insisting on certified check or money order. And even then forgery is possible so, I would hold 10 business days or talk to your bank at a manager lever to be absolutely sure.

Seller beware!

[Please consider making this a sticky]

They can get you no matter what method of payment, but I always prefer wire transfers myself. Just make sure you have another account to transfer the money into (since you gave them your wire transfer account number - they can use it to withdraw your money as well!)

If I were you, I would contact your bank and inform them of the fraudulent check and to discontinue processing it. Otherwise you will probably be charged a $10 to $30 fee for the bad check and no recourse.

If by some miracle the check is indeed good, then have the scam artist submit a formal request for refund in writing with a valid mailing address, no P.O. box and then mail them a bank check (not one drawn on your own account). Send it certified mail so they have to sign for it. ;)
