  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Beware lens mount changes

If you have a bucket of battery acid, and the RED power supply, anodize that bitch up! How funny would it be to use the red power supply to anodize your mount? ;-)

DO NOT use those cheapy allen wrenches you find in the .99 cent bin. Buy a good brand such as Allen or Bondhaus.

Also in a catalog I have, (somewhere) is an Allen wrench design that provides better contact resulting in less stripped screw heads. I'll look it up and get back to ya all. The use of those flat (oval?) head screws in this application is not good as the repetative loosening and tighting is just too much stress on the little surface area there. If possible I would suggest replacing them with low profile pan or cheese heads (not somebody from Wisconsin) this would entail counter sinking the mounting plate but that is no big deal for any machinist or tech.

OK
That brand of Allen wrench I was thinking of is called Hex plus high torque hex keys.
They have them at McMaster-Carr. Go to this site and type in 2788 under product search and scroll down three items till you see the listing for these wrenches.

There is a German brand that has a design where the corners are more "pointed" and they seem to strip less. Also if you have a worn wrench, it helps to grind it shorter so it is sharp again.

The problem should be fixed soon though.

Great news, Michael!

Really cool the way you solved the connector bump out problem. I've been turning the connector sideways and tucking the wires around it, and it's a hassle unless you are a fly tying expert, which I am not. So you can have your witness mark wherever you or your AC likes it, because you can rotate it to any of 8 positions.

Yeah, there could be more than 8 screws with the mount, but if you lost one it wouldn't be a big deal because even if you lost three (?) that mount would stay tight until you got more. Extras with the mount of both lengths wouldn't hurt.

Cool to hear that your back focus was bang on, so now you can swap to PL and back without adjusting the collar.

I'm wondering how you think RED is going to correct this problem.

cheers,

I think I missed something here. What's with the balloon?!?

Watch doug's youtibe video and it will all make sense. It provides a seal on the opening (thus protecting the sensor) preventing, dust and dirt or a loose screw from falling onto the glass protecting teh sensor.

It's a "protection" balloon. :)

Anyone have any slick ideas as to how to turn my shiny mount into cool RED black like the new Underdahls??? Can aluminum be painted with something that won't fleck off and land inside the camera?

Stephen

Head down to your local automotive paint shop get a spray can of Black Etch Primer. This etches into the metal a small bit allowing better adhesion.

Be sure NOT to paint the flange mating surface, or your FFD will be out, depending on how thick you lay it on.

The wrench is made by Wera...
