  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Better Wingnut than RED Wingnut?

that's the thing. the spring on the ratchet broke on me on one as well, so it's just a matter of time I'll need new ones, and the monstercine ones are the replacement for the bigger nuts

nobody makes those??

Let me know how those Kipp ones go for you, they look kinda cool.

Kip locks are great. They are really well made. You can replace most bolts with them and then make tools free adjustments. They are all over my steadicam.

cheers,

Nick

great, that was what I was looking for!

Anyone in Europe up for a group order?

And may I suggest RED to use them in the future? The RED wingnuts break too easily...

I ordered extra because I'd heard of breakages. What part of the wingnuts breaks?

For our battery mounts in Rental I hated the idea of needing to use a hex key to adjust the position, so I replaced them with ratcheting handles. They are similar to Kipp handles but from McMaster-Karr. They come in a great variety of sizes, are inexpensive and are quite sturdy.

They shear where the thread portion meets the wider ratchet portion, due to the central hex bolt (used to hold the ratchet spring in) needing to be long enough to go down to the base of the thread, which means there's a thin circle of metal in that part which can't take the torsional stress of tightening the wing nut hard on something:

Thanks Paul. RED should have a look at not having the thread of the hex bolt extend so far into the thread. The spring isn't very strong, so needs very little thread on the hex bolt to hold it in.

One of my RED wingnut screw was broken ,too. So I give two new 4mm wingnut screws for people who buy my shoulder rig. This screws were custom-made and did heat treatment. But I have to say that 4mm is too samll to screw hard without breaking.

Is there any chance you could post the part numbers for that? I've been looking for something to replace those stupid bolts.

I'll try to remember when I'm back in the office on Tuesday.

From McMaster-Karr

6271K29
Die Cast Zinc Adjustable Handle 3/8"-16 Thread X 2.36" Stud Length, 2.56" L Handle

This is to replace the bolt on the battery mount sled.

Unfortunately, these are 4mm bolts, and both Kipp & McMaster-Karr only go down to 5mm.
