hello,
I don't really keep up with the "latest and greatest" but for those who do, can anyone sell me on something better than a Joker-Bug 800? I'm about to buy one as I'm tired of renting, but thought I'd see if there were anything comparable or better I should check out. I'm not looking for something too powerful like the M18, as I think it would overpower my other lights and draw too much power as I'm usually in plain old wall outlets.
thanks in advanced!

I've owned my Joker 800 for 10 years now. Other than a few globes, it has worked perfectly. it is worth buying if you want one of the largest sources that will run on house power.

Its the most versatile light in my kit. The fact that the reflector can be removed and used as a bug inside a chimera lantern is so awesome. That, and the various lenses makes it a must.

... They are great/perfect owner operator lights. The octodomes, lanterns and tubes combined with some serviceable lenses in its 'par' configuration make it so versatile. Buy it! .. Just make sure you get a HS ballest.

Ps the only other light like that (as versatile) is the 1.6 joker.... In a octodome it has the same output as a 4k

I find a 1.2k HMI tends to be the minimum I can get away with using to balance interior locations with exterior sunlight - and it's often a struggle with that anyway. So if you can go for something higher wattage, I'd recommend it.

Jokers are wonderfully versatile though, I can't see anyone regretting having one.

A few years ago I saw a light similar to the Joker except this one was water resistant. As in, you can't use it underwater, but the light and ballast can be out in the rain. I don't recall the name, but this is something to check out if you work in the weather frequently.

These are very underrated IMO and they really work well even in pouring rain. You can decide weather to use 575 or 800W bulbs in them and as they share the same ballasts from 400 to 800 Watt output you can add more versatility by just adding another (smaller) 400W lamp. All these units were build from scratch and are made in Germany and Switzerland after the acquisition of Kobold through broncolor.
Altough I think it´s time for them to show something new at Photokina next month… I´ll be there and have a look.

Cheers,

Ulf
