  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Better Battery Solution Than 2 Redvolts..,Can Someone Help Me Out?

Hey guys! I want to buy a better battery solution than 2 redvolts for my RED Scarlet...


I found these v-mount battery's (Globalmediapro 190WH for Red Camera)
with the (Globalmediapro SCA2S 2-channel Charger)


And with these items
QB Switronix V-Mount
Quick Back v2
QB Battery Back (SWIT/IDX)
Does anyone used this setup? can you guys tell me if this will work? Thanks a lot! :)

Mounts:
-if I state the obvious, forgive - but you need to be sure any mount options you look at have the correct LEMO power connector to your camera. At least earlier on, by the time you bought the cheaper off-the-shelf back and wired it, you start getting into the price of the RED-spec'd versions, which, of course, just snap on. Saves a LOT of headache.

I bought the WoodenCamera QuickBack system myself. Really like it.

MUCH cheaper - Includes CHARGER!! - free shipping - and it is the SAME brand of battery Global sells.
Note this is a 150wt, not 190. I bought 3 and they keep my Scarlet running, with a PIX recorder D-tapped, all day. And ebay covers your purchase in case of loss in transit (China).
Couple of follow up Qs I had with the company got same-day responses. Very happy!

Since "better" is subjective, I'll just deal with basic cost issues.

If you already have some way to use "2 REDvolts" (a Side Handle or a rear battery module?), then the least expensive way to expand your battery capacity is to add more REDvolts at $195 per battery. If you decide to go to some other system, in addition to the cost of the batteries themselves, you are going to pay for a battery plate, some way to attache it to the camera, and a new charger. This will amount to several hundred dollars. For what it costs to move to or add a new battery system, you could purchase 4 or 5 additional REDvolts.

I leave you to decide what the "better" solution is.
 
I went with the GlobalMediaPro RED-specific batts, a Cinema Oxide bolt-on battery plate (not quick release, but solid & affordable) and a Switronix v-mount plate. It's the cheapest, quality v-mount solution I could come up with at the time, a side benefit being I can power my SmallHD with the D-tap off either the battery or Switronix plate. I absolutely love WC and have a several of their other accessories, but don't need the quick release function of their (more expensive) design. The RedVolts just don't appeal to me, too expensive and too short-lived per charge.

Best option,
You can charge these batteries with RED charger.
I have 18 Beilen bricks from same vendor (without charger, I uses RED charger) since early 2011, for m camera, field monitors to All LED panels.

Note: If you planing to use RED charger, You can't mix RED brick and beilen on same charger, some strange reason it doesn't charges. You can charge bielin battery one at a time one side 1 (not on side 2)
 
switronix jetpack from w00den is great and gives you 2 p-taps and assorted lemo outputs. It is also showing battery percentage. Go v-mount and your redvolts will sit in the case as mine do.
Make sure that your charger is a SIMULTANEOUS charger, that way you can charge 2 batteries at once. Not all chargers do this, including Red's v-mount charger.
I use a bebop charger that works well.
 
V-mount batteries are great if you are on a tripod rig or maybe even a shouldermount. If you plan to do any handheld, go with Anton Bauer gold pin mounts as it is lighter and lower profile (but last 90minutes versus the 150minutes of V-mounts, and are more expensive for the name brand version).

I have all 3 types. Red volt for backup (when we forget and run down the main battery) and I use an anton bauer to v-mount adapter plate when I need it (when on a tripod):

Just my 2c, RED's DSMC modules are beautiful, really a joy to use. Lots of flexibility and just as clean as it can get. I have both, the dual and quad-module, in most cases is use the dual, which gives me about 2hrs together with the redvolt in the sidehandle. With this my cam still usable on a monopod or even handheld if needed. One screw and you can get rid of it to get the cam lighter or switch to the quad with 2 XLs. You can always hotswap batteries and you live on just one type of them, the redvolts, which is a plus too. No need to have different chargers, you'll always have a batterie for your sidehandle. The XLs are the bonus for extra-long runtimes.

Soon enough there will be the +1 module, with which you get more functionality out of that piece of extra-space that is added by the module-adaptor.

BTW, you can get the quad + adaptor quite cheap on the sale-section in this forum.
 
+1 on the battery modules. I use the quad module and love it - easy to pop on and off - adds the perfect weight to the camera to help balance on my handheld rig - bought it and the quad charger and have no regrets
 
Don't forget aboth the belt-clip option - which is what I am using. It keeps the camera compact and light without the need for any back-plates. It works with any V-mount battery. And you can keep Your REDMOTE (and any other modules in the future) on the back of your camera...

Has anyone heard of a third party manufacture making knock off RedVolts. A DIT on set yesterday was telling him one of his buddies in LA got ahold of off brand RedVolts for half the price with slightly better performance. Not trying to beat red up but would def like to snag a few if they are out there

Michael, I too looking on Mg1 batteries, may I ask you what charger are you using to charge your Mg1 batteries?
