  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

BETA testers for the new COLOR workflow? Raise your hand!

Five...

I think you all are a little late my friends the beta testing has been going on for months (maybe not plural hahaha).

I don't know about BETA testing going on for months. I heard there was a technology preview running around RED but is sure didn't sound "beta" to me.

Personally I'd prefer that Apple spend time of improving the basic functionality and integration between Color and FCP. Fact is that Color is a pretty poor conforming tool as it is, with barely any features beyond cuts. Having it able to handle R3D natively would be nice, but without a better feature set and integration with FCP it will painfully frustrating having the ability to load and work with the RAW clips, but be very limited in how those clips can be used.

At present things like motion effects and any sort of complex effect have to be 'baked in' before taking a sequence to Color - that is going to hamper any R3D/Color conform heavily.

Yes, but if you're doing straightforward dramatic or documentary work (i.e., cuts and dissolves w/o fx) Color is pretty amazing for a 1.0 app.

My thoughts exactly.

"Color is pretty amazing for a 1.0 app."

I'd call it a 3.1 app. We used (and did some beta) when it was Final Touch for years prior to Apple's purchase. It has limitations but is a much better tool than a lot of people seem to give it credit.

I was also ex-FT user.
The one thing I missed in FT is the render speed.
FT HD 2.5 render speed is faster than Apple Color.

I still find fundamental issues with Color to be a bigger concern - taking a 23 minute HD sequence into Color results in all sort of unstableness. It worked at first, but upon revisiting it the entire thing became corrupted ane weird, and I lost a at least a day's work. Turns out the advice to keep sequences under 20 minutes really is something to look at.

There's lots of stuff I'd rather see in Color before native R3D support (if it can all be achieved at the same time, that'd be neat!)

Another fundamental issues:
Colour shift (in gamma/midtones area) that sometimes happen when round-tripping from FCP-Color-FCP.
Very very very long render time.

Native R3D support? I don't mind, as long as they (Apple) fix all the bugs that occurred in 1.0.2.
