  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Beta Camera Build 3.2.8

Came back to the 3.0.7 firmware.
For what I've seen the 3.2.8 is the less stable firmware I've checked, with histogram issues - gap to the right side ......................
..................I know there's too pressure for something hot coming up from U, higher frames etc..
but I think that the bigger improvement U could do is the power management - I'm thinking about it as THE more important feature the Epic/Scarlet is missing... -
and 1 frame more for 3K - for Us PAL guys - and of course 50 for Hdrx (yes pre-roll would be nice too).
About the 1K... really the Scarlet can't do some nice higher frame with burst mode at a decent resolution, at least 1920x1080??? mmm... come on, guys, smells like Epic protecting politics).

Well Carmine,
I aggree, let’s wait a little more before taking the upgrade on the set.
Also, I hear what you’re saying and we all miss that 1 extra frame and lots of other things that as you correctly stated, but I think .....we should give them a break; after all they have done a marvellous job so far. Were would we be without RED ?? J

And yes, (smells like Epic protecting politics)the answer is probably just that.
After all they’re in to this venture to be financially successful as well as everything else.
The Scarlet-x processor must be way inferior to that of the Epic hence the price and specs.
Still, it would be a very generous present to us all if they could implement some of the Epic benefits to the Scarlet world.

Thank God for RED!!!

@Maik and Brant:
I'm very happy about the features and the benefits of the Scarlet just now. No doubt about that.
I'm not among the users pressing redteam to fast and deep improvements, I'm ok with the today's features.
I'm only talking about some useless feature like 1K (for me, not pretending this is the law :)) with a horribly cropped image useless for 4K or 3k matching (if U talk about cinema. If Your business is the web U're welcome and I'm happy for U:) and I'm thinking about a possible burst mode in 3K letting to give us higher frame rate in that resolution. Probably we'll see kind of in the future (especially with some cameras with higher frame and resolution coming out in the next months...)
About protecting the Epic - well, guys, it's a clear fact and I must not explain anything about that...
In the end I still repeat I'm very satisfied with the features of the Scarlet I'm working with , and I'm arguing about true and serious improvements in the future for making it a better camera.
To be clear I'd like more:
power management
and
25 for 3K.
For other things I'll wait for what the future will bring to us (with the dragon, sure, but I'm aspecting something very cool also before... let see).

Of course Mauro, and Infact I'm not pushing for faster improvements with very beta firmware or similar.
Let's make more stable firmware and less beta with weird conseguences...
All I'm saying are some words just for talking with friends with my same toys :))))

Really??? IMO, Scarlet already does more than it should for the $$$. There's a reason that Epic costs 3 times what a Scarlet does. You're looking a gift horse in the mouth.
ahahahah!!!!!

3K 25p HDR any reason why this cant be done guys, we have 3K 24p HDR ?

If you want higher frames rates, get an Epic. Otherwise stop being an ungrateful spoiled s__t.

If you want product line protection politics, look at other brands. Red is already giving you a lot for very little. I paid 40K for my Epic package, why should Scarlet owners compete with my rental business even more than they already do?

There has to be a valid reason to rent an Epic instead.

Everybody cheers about "democracy" but when Black Magic released the Resolve free version, I was out $1000 I felt cheated out of. I am not a full time colorist, but it has driven down hourly rates so far down that many are quitting here in Montreal - just no way to make a living anymore. Which means fewer and fewer people are devoting all their time to truly mastering that craft. It's fine to say "it's all about the talent." I agree that it should be, but equipment purchases are business investments, and Red is not in the business of screwing over their loyal supporters just so you can stop your whining. Price is also a business notion, and the price of gear affects the price you can charge for an hour of your life on this earth.

Even worse was when Black Magic screwed over their customers to release what they just paid $250 000 for at $1000. People lost their houses over that one.

This is a business. Not a hobby destined to help you make your indy whatever film or to make wedding videos look better. Grow up, deal with it.

Are you asking about the integration time? I'm assuming you mean 1/24 second - 1/8000 second. The integration time is how long each frame is exposed for - it does not affect the speed of playback (like your frame rate does), but rather the exposure of each frame and the motion blur characteristics.

You said that we can record to an external device? How?

There is a checkbox on the bottom of the SYSTEM dialog which enables external recording only. The camera still acts as though it's recording and will trigger external recorders through HD-SDI just as it does during "normal" recording. The only difference is that it is not recording to the camera's media. We have safe guards in place so it is clear you are in this mode. For example the record icon is super imposed with EXT and you are not allowed to record in this mode if an SSD is mounted in the camera.

Well-said Rob !!!
I totally agree…even I can only afford a Scarlet at the moment, but I am grateful for what I’ve got.
Let’s learn how to get the most out of what we have before we claim it’s not good enough!!
After all photography is the art of expressing with the essential tool……the light!
One thing though……..perhaps is not fair to hit all the Wedding Videographers so harshly,….not all of them. After all it would not be a too bad idea loosing most of the armatures in that field ending up with, perhaps fewer, but more filmic Wedding footage.
These are some good examples by our good Tonaci.

Thanks for the info it would have been nice to hear that it would kick out frame rates like the phantom camera=) Epic one day I hope but for now I'm in love with being able to afford the scarlet and it's ever changing for the better features.

I know I shouldn't be surprised that some of you guys are asking for your Scarlets to magically have the same specs as an Epic with some sort of juju fantasy pixy dust firmware that switches your Scarlet hardware to Epic hardware.... But I must admit I sit here shaking my head in disbelief that some of you actually think that is a possible reality.

People should appreciate the power of the hardware they sit with already. I own both, I rarely shoot 100+ FPS... A Scarlet could do me just fine if I were just doing a movie at a time... I have plans of world domination, .... Damn... I let it slip... Anyway... Two different beasts but both beyond anything out there with what you can do with it... Please do not let the masses affect the loyal. We know how special RED is.

Some people are never satisfied, Jarred...
All I know is that I spent the last 5 years waiting for the chance to own a Red camera... since before the first Red One even shipped. Fast forward to now, I have a Scarlet. I'm just finishing up the color grade on my first commercial which will actually run in theaters before TV, shot 100% Scarlet... and the camera was bulletproof. The biggest problem the whole shoot is when I literally fell over backwards in mid shot and bumped the battery off while I was recording.
Naturally, the clip was somehow absolutely fine (WTF?!?!- Maybe there is some juju fantasy pixy dust in there, Jarred!)
The footage is fantastic. Halfway through the shoot this firmware comes along and gives me the 16:9 formats I needed desperately for some of the slow-mo work with a 16:9 target output. No issues at all with it.

I know that whatever you can milk out of the hardware you can. That's been shown over and over. If the limiting factors are what I think they might be, maybe we can squeeze a bit extra out of her, but 5K 1.9:1 or 16:9 isn't happening folks.

You mean you can't do this?

My faith in RED is shaken.

If you guys would just stop pulling rabbits out of your hats, like the OLED EVF, Dragon, etc, this wouldnt happen! Your victims of your own bar-raisingness!

Hehe.... Jarred , that's your own fault ;) if you work with fairies and magic dust to create cameras you have to expect people to believe in miracles :)

I was always under the impression that your 1K option is somewhere along the lines of SD but as it turns out its 720p which really is awesome. So there are miracles happening here already. The biggest miracle being the EPIC in itself! :)

I don't understand the wild expectations. Especially if they are voiced as a must have or even worse as an "artificial hold-back" kinda thing. But a lot of us love to dream and speculate. of course I would always gladly take some magic, but I never would really assume anything to happen or be whiny about what we have, because its so incredibly amazin as it is.

but also what I do understand is e.g. the asking for the 2fps more on 3K for european projects. Because it sounds "so believably close". But I also know if you can do it you will sometime or would have done so already. What would be nice to know if something like that is at all possible with higher compression. But also Redcode doesn't seem to be the deciding factor ;)

Jarred, I love my camera. It's one of the greatest things I ever called my own! Until I'll have my epic ;) thank you so much for all your efforts and a great firmware update!

Seeing how at the time most of us bought our Scarlets 25fps HDRx at 3K was in the official specs one could expect to still see that. Maybe at 3K HD? And since the Scarlet is doing 1/4 fps of what the Epic does at 4K, 2K and 1K, one might assume it to be able to do the same 1/4 at 5K and 5K WS. Although at 3K and 1K WS the Scarlet's doing 1/3.33 of what the Epic does.

Now, I'm not whining and I'm not demanding that the Scarlet-X gets higher framerates. I'm just trying to point out why people might feel it should be possible to get higher framerates out of the Scarlet at some of the current resolutions. The only thing that would make a big difference for me personally would be getting 50 fps at 2.5K or - if it's possible - at 3K HD.
