  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Beta Camera Build 3.2.8

I get "package not found" every time I try and upgrade...anyone have a fix?

Any lens that hasn't been programed in the firmware you are "lucky" if it works remember :)
Yes, I was thrilled to hear that those uncharacterized lenses worked, as were many other RED users.

But, as RED has stated that they can't characterize every lens, I'd hope that they could pull the data from the lens' chip like Canon cameras, so that they will work with lenses that the firmware is unaware of?

Is that reasonable? To expect they they will work (and continue to work if they once worked) - but just won't have the blinding fast auto focus (that I'm guessing is part of the characterization that RED performs)?

BTW - I've got to throw $500 at a 3rd party SDI -> HDMI converter (money I can't spend at RED), if the HDMI outputs are not going to be working at 1080p24.

If that isn't going to happen, I understand that my priorities are not yours.

But, could you give me some guidance so that I'll know whether to give up and hope a converter works, or wait until the next build?

BTW - love all the new features that my camera keeps getting!!! That certainly didn't ever happen with a Canon camera!!!

Thank you for the continued free firmware upgrades!

I'm excited to see so many great features, but I have to say that I'm pleased to see the new options for programming user keys... something I hope I had a little something to do with from feedback given. It's great to see the fruits of a proper company-customer dialogue and relationship.

Thanks again.

Just did some very very brief tests. I noticed on the power menu that it now also seems to tell you the minutes remaining as well as percentage, which is fantastic.

For those curious, the 1K resolutions read in Premiere Pro as:

1K WS = 1280x480 (Max FPS seems to be 120fps)
1K HD = 1280x720 (Max FPS seems to be 89fps)

thanks for the info! I really appreciate it!

I usually go with release firmware only - but enabled phantom power is too "big" to not try the beta this time :)
We've got the A-Box so I'll report back if everything works later on...

25P 4k 4kHD

25P 4k 4kHD

Any news on 25P fps for 4K or 4kHD and other formats for Scarlet? Not able to update at the moment. Thx

Hi guys, I seem to have got myself a bit stuck. I updated the firmware and it all worked well. I have the Scarlet with the side handle only. I seem to have a big problem now as my down button on my side handle has reassigned itself since the update as 'Zebra 2 Toggle'. Now I can find no way to select Setup, Maintenance or Playback in the menu and so I can't reconfigure my side handle. Has anyone else experienced this and does anyone know a workaround?

Many thanks,

Pete

BETA BETA BETA...

Significant changes since previous build v3.0.7:
* Added 5K HD, 3K HD, 2K HD, 1K HD formats
* Added 1K WS format (Epic 400fps, Scarlet 120fps)
[..]

What about adding scope formats for the high frame rate modes too.
This is a CMOS sensor, so its line speed driven. It technically doesn't really matter how wide the line is, just how many of you read per second.
OK, compressing more lines is a limiting factor to a certain degree, but lets do the calc:

5120x * 2700y pixels can be recorded at 96 fps, right?
Thats 96 * 2700 = 259200 full lines per second.

259200 / 400 = 648 lines per frame, roughly, for the new 1K mode?
Recording that with e.g. 1556 pixels width would mean we get a 2.4 mode at 400 fps.

The same analogy applies for all other modes.

You can easily increase the line width even more, you may even allow recording of the full 5K line (super super super wide screen), as this would not yield higher pixel/s ratios than the standart 5K modes:

5120x * 2700y pixels/frame * 96 frames/second = 1,327,104,000 pixels/second
5120x * 648y pixels/frame * 400 frames/second = 1,327,104,000 pixels/second
1280x * 648y pixels/frame * 400 frames/second = 331,776,000 pixels/second

So the compression engine has a lot of headroom for these lower res high speed modes, which in turn can be used for lower compression (which helps a lot, as its lower resolution anyway). I just think that we can increase the line width to more than just 16:9 or 2:1 for these modes.

Or have I missed something and it works already?

Just an idea.

Axel

ws in 4K and 3K would be very nice for faster slomo whenn you are shooting in 5K.

EXACTLY! I hope one day 5K 24FPS WS will be released from the marketing jail:)

Settings:Audio/Video:Channels gives you the choice between unbalanced, balanced and balanced/48V.

Nope, I don't have that option on my Epic M

Wondering if other Epic M owners have this same issue with Beta build 3.2.8- just to get an idea what electronic may need to be updated my Epic M is SN 1069
