Hey Guys

This may already be a topic for conversation, but I was just wondering what people think would be the best workflow for use on a 90 minute feature film. We are looking at shooting a feature on the Red at the start of next year. The edit is to take place on a high end mac pro with the film intended to go into the DVD market. I was starting to think editing the proxy's as the way to go, but I have spoken to people that say using the Quicktime ProRes files are an easier option. So just looking for a bit of guidance.

Do you mean feature for Cinema of TV ? What is the release format ?

I would render everything to HD prores files and edit in Final Cut. When the edit is done take out an edl or a xml and take it thru Crimson or Monkey extract and then render it out to either DPX or QuickTimes for the final master or grading.

Using the referencefiles will get you in to alot of trouble when doing a feature. When using effects like a dissolve you will have to render the timeline for that effect and so on. The Prores workflow gives you realtime editing in HD.

I'd like to second this. You can do a quick version (fast debayer) in ProRes or even DVCProHD for editing and later a high quality version with the help of Crimson. That way you can finish with FCP and Color in ProRes, which will be good enough for DVD (would even be good for BluRay).

We are doing this workflow on the feature I'm currently on.

We're transcoding the .R3D files to 1080p23.98 ProRes (SQ) at Half Debayer (Standard). The resulting offline files look great and will make for a good looking final, offline cut.
