Long time lurker, first time poster.... Obviously, getting very excited over the coming REDs (like everyone else). Specifically the 2/3" Scarlet. Trying to decide on my best course of action. Going to be shooting a lot of up close (relatively) action sports and I want to with the best value (price/performance) lens setup on the 2/3".

I was originally thinking wait and get more details on the fixed 8x and maybe get a high quality wide angle adapter. Don't want to risk image qualit though so I wanted to look at other options.

I would want something like a 35mm equivalent of about a 16mm(ish), but with the crop factor, i'm sure I would be down in fisheye territory and I'm assuming it would get pretty distorted.

Other options would be c-mount or b4, and I'm not too familiar with either. I'm assuming I won't be able to get 3k, out of the C at least?

Mucho appreciated!

And I realize I just titled this thread WIND angle... which probably has most of you scratching your heads. Not a good start.

I feel you, but I don't think that a 16mm after crop is going to happen. With a 3.9x crop factor you would need a 4mm lens, which I imagine would have that "fisheye" effect. I think Sigma has a still lens that is a 4.5mm and it is 180 degree fisheye.

I'm guessing the Red Mini Primes are going to be a solid option for lenses. The prices are TBD, but what people are guessing at (GUESSING) is that they may be $400-$700 each. It looks like they are going to have a 6.5mm and an 8mm, which would translate into (roughly) 25mm and 31mm after a x3.9 crop factor. I know these aren't "WIDE" lenses, after the crop factor, but I can't imagine anything smaller then these without starting to fisheye.

If you need that 16mm wide lens, you may have to go with the S35 Scarlett, or even the FF. Something you should definitely consider before buying any of the Mini Primes. I believe they are going to be designed to cover the smaller sensors and thus won't be useful to you if you do eventually upgrade to a larger format camera.

Hmmm, i'll do some research on the Kowas. In the mean time, i'll keep my options open. Still looks like we'll be waiting a little while yet.

Thank for the help guys.

Could not hold back...

Could not hold back...

Its best to have the wind at your back if you want a faster lens.

Sorry...

Luv Ya. Mean It.

P.S. Thanks to all the LA red users and big up to the whole red community for continuing to push for a higher standard in video cameras while making cameras more accessible at the same time.

In our booth at NAB, Abel will have a brand new 6mm prime designed for precisely this.

So does this mean that no matter what lens type you use for the 2/3 cinema you will have a crop factor of ca. 3,9x? I thought the primes would be the amount of mm it was and not another factor... or am I just really confused here?

yes and no. if you have a FF35 scarlet/epic, then a 50mm lens will work as a 50mm lens, due to the sensor being FF: no crop. Now on a 2/3" sensor to get the equivalent FOV you would need a 50/3,9= ~13mm lens. Nothing else. That is also why the RED Mini Primes range from 6.5mm to 75mm - about the range an 25-300mm prime set on an s35/ff35 kit would give you.

About the wide lens: I was a part of shooting a short feature with the 2/3" SI mini2k in Kazan, Russia last summer, and we were using some old primes that were excellent. The kit started with a 4.5mm wide angle that didn't even have a focus ring - you had to just stop it down to about f8 to have everything in focus(the larger the aperture the closer action needed to be) We didn't use that in any shots(but it was really really wide). the next was 8mm I think and that was a very nice wide lens, the rest of the kit included a 12.5mm, 25mm, 35mm, 50mm and 75mm if I remember correctly. I can't remember what make they were, but they used threads to attach to the camera instead of any mount, and produced Excellent DOF at larger apertures even on the 2/3" sensor. Should call or mail the DOP and ask what lens they were as it was an excellent kit for a 2/3" camera.

4.8mm Schneider, 2.7mm Fujinon

4.8mm Schneider, 2.7mm Fujinon

Fujinon also makes a 2.7mm for 1" sensor that would cover 2/3" without maybe dark corners, model FE185C086HA-1,

There was some talk on Scarletuser about C mount lenses,

Schneider makes some good 2/3" lenses, the "compact" ones do not have a focus scale, but do have a focus lock, good for high G action shooting, they have a fine focus thread so are easy to focus if you adjust the lock screw with a 2mm wrench so that it just turns, if you make it too loose then it will wiggle,

I'd like to get one of these 4.8mm, but the price is a little high for me now...

The great thing about Scarlet C mount is that there are soo many lenses you can use from f/0.7 - f/0.85 for low light and focal length from like 1.8mm to 4000mm...

Here is a link to a 6mm Megapixel for 2/3",

Says "This lens is ideal for use in 3D metrology and in crash tests."

OMG THAT SUCKS! And that makes a clear no then, 2/3 cinema can and will only be a 2/3 cinema...

Then I don't understand why the big amount of different lensetypes to choose from, it seems they do excactly the same... they all have crop factor none of them is what they seem to be. And how in the world would you ever achieve fish eye on video?

Does this mean you can use for example any kind of Canon EF lens with same crop factor? My logical world is falling apart...
